SPORTS SHORTS: No. 6 Urbandale sweeps aside Bobcats

URBANDALE — The Class 5A No. 6 Urbandale softball team totaled 26 hits and 26 runs in its doubleheader sweep of Marshalltown in Monday’s CIML Iowa Conference games.

The host J-Hawks won the opener 13-2 in six innings and captured the second game 13-1 in five innings.

In the opener, Bridget Carroll accounted for two of Marshalltown’s six hits, including a double, and Madison Finch connected for a solo home run in the top of the first inning. Emily Hass singled and scored, while Regan Mazour and Ciara Feldman both added hits for MHS (8-23, 2-12).

McKaylee Dawson got the loss in the circle, striking out four and walking three. Urbandale racked up 11 hits and ended the game with a seven-run sixth inning.

Urbandale rapped out 15 hits in the second game, including home runs for Allison Yoder and Anna Simon. Yoder and Jessica Walljasper both drove in four runs for the J-Hawks. Walljasper got the pitching win as well, walking one while striking out seven.

Dawson had two of Marshalltown’s four hits in the nightcap, and she also scored a run. Erica Johnson and McKenna Major both singled, with Major driving in Dawson to bring the Bobcats within 2-1 two innings into the game. Kailee Pollard took the loss in game two.

Comets take care of G-R softball, 10-0

GLADBROOK — Samantha Ubben tossed a one-hitter and Leah Yantis homered to help the Class 2A No. 13 BCLUW softball team defeat Gladbrook-Reinbeck 10-0 in six innings in Monday’s NICL West Division contest.

The Comets (23-8) compiled 11 hits altogether, with four of them going for extra bases. Yantis finished 2-for-3 with a double and a home run to lead the BCLUW bats. Ubben and Jordyn Beeghly both went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Ubben struck out eight and did not walk a batter. The lone hit for the Rebels came from Marissa Berendes.

Spots open for Chris Street golf event

IOWA CITY — The annual Iowa Basketball Golf Tournament in memory of Chris Street will be held on August 28 at Finkbine Golf Course.

For those interested in participating, team spots for the four-person best ball format are available for the 8 a.m. shotgun start. The $600 entry fee includes golf with cart, tournament participant bag, continental breakfast, lunch and a post-tournament awards social at the University Club tentatively at 6 p.m.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams in each of the five flights. There is also hole prizes on all 18 holes as well as a raffle and a silent auction.
