SPORTS SHORTS: Trojans’ game relocated to State Center

The Iowa High School Athletic Association announced on Wednesday that the location of the West Marshall baseball team’s Class 2A District 13 final game against South Hamilton has been moved from Dike to State Center.

The Trojans (28-6) will now host South Hamilton (10-18) at 7 p.m. in hopes of advancing to the Substate 7 championship game, which will be played Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Marshalltown High School.

Knights knock Royals around, 19-2 in 4

MASON CITY — The second-ranked Mason City Newman Knights broke open a 1-all game with a 13-run second inning, routing Colo-NESCO 19-2 in four innings in Tuesday’s Class 1A District 4 quarterfinals.

Newman (29-3) knocked out 11 hits and took advantage of eight walks issued by Royals pitching. Colo-NESCO starter Jacob Clatt couldn’t escape the second inning and suffered the loss after allowing nine runs on four hits and three walks over 1 1/3 frames.

Sean Cutler led Colo-NESCO (7-21) offensively, going 2-for-2 with a run scored. Bryce Niemeyer was 1-for-2 with an RBI, Garret Tiarks singled and scored, and Phil Bower drove in a run.

Josh Thilges was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and three runs scored for Newman, which advances to face Clarksville in tonight’s district semifinals in Mason City.

Cougars eliminated 5-4 in extra innings

SHEFFIELD — The AGWSR baseball team rallied back from a three-run deficit to force extra innings, only to fall 5-4 in nine innings to North Butler in Tuesday’s Class 1A District 4 quarterfinal.

The Cougars (8-8) trailed 4-1 before scoring one run in the fifth on a solo homer by Matt Pfaltzgraff and two more in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run homer by Nathan Karsjens to tie the game.

North Butler (8-13) notched the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth and Brandon Reiher, who came on to pitch for the Bearcats in the eighth, got the last three outs for the win.

Caleb Bartling took the loss for AGWSR, pitching six innings in relief of Luke Starr. Bartling allowed one unearned run on three hits and four walks while striking out six. Josh Bartling had three hits to lead the Cougars, while Pfaltzgraff finished 2-for-4 with a home run.

North Butler will meet West Fork in tonight’s 5 p.m. district semifinal game in Mason City.

MHS volleyball camp set for July 27-29

The Marshalltown Bobcat volleyball staff will be hosting coaches of Midwest Performance Volleyball for Individual Skills camps on July 27-29.

Camp directors include Kaylee Manns, a former Iowa State All-American, Emily Brown, former Big 12 Freshman of the year for Kansas University, and Allison Mayfield, a former outside hitter for Kansas University. All three former players are currently on the international circuit.

The camp will cost $85 per person for those from entering grades 9-12. That session will take place from 8-11 a.m. and again from noon to 2 p.m.

For junior high camp, the cost will be $40 per player and will take place from noon to 2 p.m.

Bobcats hosting youth football clinic

Marshalltown High School will host a Friday Night Lights youth football camp on July 28 at Leonard Cole Field.

Youth entering grades K-8 will receive coaching in the fundamental skills of football from the MHS coaching staff and current Bobcat players under the lights from 7:30-9:30 p.m. The camp is free, but everyone is asked to register with new Bobcat head football coach Adam Goodvin at agoodvin@marshalltown.k12.ia.us.

“Having the young campers under the lights on a Friday night with current MHS football players will hopefully be a special time for them,” said Goodvin. “Hopefully we can all have a great night of football.”

Participants are asked to wear a T-shirt, shorts and shoes to the camp.
