GRANGER — The Marshalltown boys’ golf team continued its strong start to the season on Monday when it took down Urbandale on the road at Jester Park Golf Course.

Once again, senior Nate Vance was the low man for the Bobcats, shooting a medalist round of 1-over-par 73. Sophomore Cole Davis, junior JD Pollard and senior Tate Carlson finished out the scoring for Marshalltown, shooting 75, 76 and 77 respectively.

The Bobcats outshot Urbandale by 67 strokes, winning 301-368.

MHS head coach Lucas Johnson said his guys did well to come out with another victory in their second dual of the year.

“Given the length of Jester Park, one of the longest courses we’ll play all year, we were happy to get four scores in the mid-70’s,” Johnson said via email. “Tee-to-green our guys played very well. We didn’t see as many putts drop as we normally do, but sometimes you have those days on unfamiliar greens.”

Though they didn’t factor into the overall score, senior Luke Appel and sophomore Mason Reid each improved on their first rounds of the season, with both putting up an 80 on the day. The Bobcats JV showed out as well, winning 322-384. Lucas Schneider and Keygan Hansen shot 80s, Conner Beaty recorded a 79 and Tate Kuehner put up an 83.

Marshalltown hits the links at home for the first time this season when it welcomes in highly-rated Johnston on Wednesday for a dual at Elmwood Country Club starting at 9 a.m.

“We’re looking forward to facing one of the top teams in the state in Johnston at our home course on Wednesday,” Johnson said. “It will be a great test to see where we’re at early in the season.”
