Local trio named IHSBCA all-state
Over the weekend, the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association put together its first and second team all-state squads, and three area players earned spots on the 1A and 2A teams.
North Tama graduate Cameron Hoeg earned the only first-team nod for area athletes, appearing as a utility player on the 1A first team. Hoeg was both an effective infielder and pitcher for the Redhawks, going 7-2 on the mound with a .79 ERA and striking out 86 in 53 innings pitched. He also hit .440 at the plate with 43 RBIs and 41 runs scored. Hoeg was also selected as a first-team utility player in 2016.
Joining Hoeg with 1A honors was teammate Cael Kopriva, who earned a second-team laurel at catcher. Kopriva hit .418 this season with 46 runs scored and 24 RBIs all while almost every game at catcher for North Tama.
West Marshall grad David Disney was the lone selection to the 2A all-state team, earning a nod on the second team as an outfielder. Disney hit .457 on the year with 44 runs scored and 40 RBIs for the Trojans.
Both Disney and Hoeg played in the IHSBCA All-Star Series with the Small Schools East team, who took second in the series.
Also released was the academic all-state squads, and North Tama graduates Joe and Will Earley and Colo-NESCO grad Garret Tiarks earned a spot on the second team.
