SPORTS SHORTS: Area golfers play in Junior Iowa PGA

AMES — Earlier in July the 42nd annual Junior Iowa PGA Championships were played and some area golfers made waves and competed well.

Three area athletes competed in the boys 16-18 division, with JD Pollard from Marshalltown taking ninth with a two-day score of 7-over-par 149, Jesper Holke-Farnam from Grundy Center finishing in a tie for 18th at 13 over 155 and Jake Bangasser, also from Grundy Center, finishing tied for 23rd with a 15 over 157.

Bangasser also won the longest putt contest, nailing a putt of 21 feet, 5 inches, on the second hole of the Ames Golf and Country Club.

In the boys 12-13 division, Colin Schmit of Marshalltown finished in a tie for fifth place with a 163 and Derek Peng, also from Marshalltown, shot a 167 to tie for seventh place.

Rounding out the area players was Isaiah Zoske in the boys 11-and-under division, as he took fifth with a 90 in two days of 9-hole play.

Farley garners preseason All-American

Northern Iowa senior linebacker Jared Farley has been named a STATS Preseason All-American. Farley was one of 17 Missouri Valley Football Conference players selected to the All-America teams.

Farley garnered a team-high 80 tackles in 2016 and was named to the all-MVFC second team. Farley also tallied 3.5 tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and a quarterback sack. Earlier this summer, Farley also earned a spot on the preseason all-Missouri Valley Football Conference squad.

The Panthers will open the 2017 season Sept. 2 at Iowa State at 7 p.m.
