Iowa’s Jewell wins week’s Big Ten award

IOWA CITY — University of Iowa senior linebacker Josey Jewell was named Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Week following Iowa’s 24-3 win over Wyoming on Saturday in Kinnick Stadium. Jewell was also named the national Defensive Player of the Week by the Walter Camp Football Foundation on Sunday.

Jewell, a native of Decorah, Iowa, led the Hawkeyes with 14 tackles, including seven solo stops against the Cowboys. His totals included two sacks, 2.5 tackles for loss and one pass break-up. The sacks and tackles for loss match career bests for Jewell.

His effort led an Iowa defense that allowed three points to Wyoming, as the Cowboys totaled 233 yards of offense and finished 6-for-20 on third and fourth down conversion attempts.

The Big Ten honor is the first for Jewell in his career.
