No. 14 Urbandale tracks down ’Cats

Regan Mazour

URBANDALE — The Bobcats’ bid at a spot in the upcoming rankings got derailed by an inability to finish what they started.

The Marshalltown volleyball team leapt out to leads in each of three sets but could not put away Class 5A No. 14 Urbandale, falling 25-22, 25-22, 25-19 in Tuesday’s CIML Iowa Conference showdown.

The host J-Hawks (14-6, 1-1) got their first divisional win by outlasting a fast-starting Marshalltown squad that lacked the balance it needed offensively to deliver in the end.

“We showed we can play with the ranked teams, but now we have to be able to put them away,” said MHS head coach Chris Brees.

The Bobcats (12-9, 2-1) were led by a whopping 17 kills and 29 digs for senior outside hitter Regan Mazour. Ciara Feldman finished with seven digs and 18 digs, but the rest of the MHS squad combined for just five kills and 27 digs.

Molly Bach added three kills while Erica Johnson and Emily Hass had one apiece. Madi Finch ended the night with 27 assists, while Johnson and Hass teamed up for Marshalltown’s only block.

Feldman proved to be the Bobcats’ only threat behind the service line, going 20-for-21 with four aces, while Sarah Jacobs contributed a 5-for-6 effort with the team’s only other ace. Mazour, Johnson and McKenna Major each served 9-for-9 as MHS made only five service errors as a team.

Marshalltown takes a week off before hosting No. 15 Johnston next Tuesday for the Bobcats’ Senior Night match.
