SPORTS SHORTS: Comets go 2-1 at Roland-Story quad
STORY CITY — The BCLUW volleyball team traveled to compete in the Roland-Story Tournament on Monday, where they came away with a 2-1 record.
The Comets (13-9) beat Madrid (21-14, 21-14) and Newton (21-14, 21-11) while falling to tournament host Roland-Story (21-19, 21-19) on the day.
Easton Swanson was the top attacker for the tournament with 24 kills, but Lauren Anderson and Madison Ubben each were more involved offensively, recording 13 kills each. Swanson also led defensively with 23 digs, followed by Kaylee Goecke with 18. Cate Nason led the way in assists with 53.
The Comets host Class 2A No. 3 Grundy Center for an NICL West Division matchup tonight, starting at 7:30 p.m.
MCC soccer falls to Iowa Lakes
SPENCER — The NJCAA No. 11 Marshalltown Community College soccer team lost its first match of the season on Saturday, falling to Iowa Community College Athletic Conference foe Iowa Lakes Community College 4-2 on the road.
Tigers midfielder Bruno Osorio scored the first goal of the match one minute, 13 seconds into the game, but the Lakers rolled off four-straight goals over the next 80 minutes before MCC defender Miguel Munoz added the last goal of the game in the 84th minutes.
Tigers leading scorer Kino Ryosuke had two shots and a shot on goal in the game, while Rafael Vacas had an assist, two shots on goal and three total shots.
The loss was the first for the Tigers this season, dropping MCC to 6-1 and 3-1 in conference play. Iowa Lakes improves to 2-2 in ICCAC play and 6-4 as a whole.
The Tigers return to action today with a match against the Mount Mercy JV team at home, starting at 4 p.m. on the MCC campus.
