SPORTS SHORTS: Comets outlast East Marshall netters
LE GRAND — Easton Swanson hammered out 25 kills to help BCLUW fend off East Marshall for a five-set win in Thursday’s NICL West Division showdown, 11-25, 25-18, 25-17, 18-25, 15-11.
Swanson accounted for nearly half of BCLUW’s kills, going 25-for-45 with only three swinging errors for a .489 kill efficiency. Kennedy Williams chipped in with seven kills, setter Cate Nason had six kills, while Lauren Anderson, Kerrigan Hatch and Madison Ubben contributed four kills apiece.
Nason collected 36 assists, Kaylee Goecke led the way with 24 digs, and Swanson provided four blocks for the Comets (9-6, 2-1). Williams was the team’s top server, going 21-for-22 with three aces, as BCLUW served 90-for-93 with seven aces in all.
East Marshall, which led 11-8 in the deciding fifth set before giving way, was paced by 13 kills from Juliana Arifi and Ryleigh Thompson. McKaylie Coleman contributed seven kills, Cloe Kelling had five and Amber Martenson added three.
Mustang setters McKenzie Hinegardner and Maria Rasmusson had 25 and 13 assists, respectively, while Brittany Anderson paced the defense with 30 digs. Coleman’s serving night included four consecutive aces in the first set as East Marshall (3-12, 1-3) started strong.
G-R takes down AGWSR in three sets
REINBECK — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck volleyball team won a NICL West Division matchup over AGWSR in three sets on Thursday, 25-9, 26-24, 25-8.
Paige Eiffler led the way in kills for the Rebels (16-6, 3-2) with 11, while Maddie Frischmeyer had 25 assists. Saari Kuel was the top G-R defender with five digs.
The Cougars (5-12, 1-2) were led by Makenna Kuper offensively with nine kills, while Taryan Barrick had eight against the Rebels. Mandy Willems had 19 assists and she led defensively with 10 digs.
Wolverines downed by Collins-Maxwell
GARWIN — Collins-Maxwell came away with a three-set sweep of the GMG volleyball team in Thursday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division clash, 25-14, 25-22, 25-19.
GMG was led by Peyton Gallentine with eight kills, while Mable Dieleman contributed three kills and Tory Novotny had two more. Madi Krull finished with 12 assists for the Wolverines (7-13, 2-2).
McKensie Vaske and Dieleman both had nine digs to lead the GMG defense, which managed just one block on the evening. Vaske also served 14-for-15 with two aces, and Novotny went 6-for-6 with one ace.
Colo-NESCO volleyball sweeps CAL
COLO — The Colo-NESCO volleyball team took down Iowa Star South Division foe CAL in a three-set sweep at home, 25-10, 25-13, 25-19.
Riley Reischauer was the lead attacker for the Royals (4-10, 3-1) with six kills while Molly Barten and Chelsea Henze each had five. Henze also led in assists with 12, followed by Reischauer with 10.
Defensively, Emma Sarver had 14 digs against the Cadets (1-12, 0-2).
