SPORTS SHORTS: Comets sweep aside South Hardin
CONRAD — Easton Swanson hammered out 18 kills to go with 15 digs and a team-leading two blocks as the BCLUW volleyball squad swept South Hardin, 25-18, 25-11, 25-12, in Thursday’s NICL West Division contest.
Olivia Hughes added eight kills and setter Cate Nason chalked up seven kills to go with 30 assists. Kaylee Goecke led the Comets (8-5, 1-0) with 18 digs while serving 15-for-15 with two aces, and Parker Scurr contributed 12 digs with 14-for-14 serving. Nason served 19-for-20 with a team-leading three aces, and Mackenzie Trinkle finished 8-for-8 with two aces.
BCLUW entertains Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Tuesday night, while South Hardin (0-3, 0-2) hosts a tournament on Saturday in Eldora.
Mustangs get past BGM in four sets
LE GRAND — The East Marshall volleyball team overcame its second-set struggles to take down BGM in Thursday’s non-conference pairing, prevailing 25-18, 16-25, 25-14, 25-23.
Juliana Arifi led the Mustangs (2-6) with 19 kills to go along with 15 digs, while Ryleigh Thompson tallied seven kills. McKaylie Coleman and Cloe Kelling both chipped in with three kills. McKenzie Hinegardner had 10 assists, 13 digs and four service aces, while Maria Rasmusson finished with eight assists and a team-best five aces against winless BGM (0-13).
Defensively, Brittany Anderson led East Marshall with 29 digs while posting a 19-for-20 performance on serve-receive. Genesis Wanatee added 12 digs.
The Mustangs host a seven-team tournament on Saturday starting at 9 a.m.
Ranked Panthers take down GMG
TRIPOLI — Class 1A No. 7 Tripoli (8-0, 1-0) turned away the GMG volleyball team in three sets, winning 25-12, 25-8, 25-8 in Thursday’s Iowa Star Conference contest.
Eve Gallentine led GMG (2-5, 1-1) with five digs, while Madi Krull finished with four assists. McKensie Vaske had a team-high two kills, while Mable Dieleman and Peyton Gallentine tacked one kill apiece.
Dunkerton defeats league foe Royals
COLO — Newly-ranked Dunkerton (8-2, 3-0) dispatched the Colo-NESCO volleyball team with a three-set sweep in Thursday’s Iowa Star Conference clash, winning 25-11, 25-18, 25-10.
Rylee Purvis led the host Royals with five kills, one block and the team’s only service ace. Lindsey Riese added four kills, while Molly Barten and Chelsea Henze had three kills apiece. Henze was the Royals’ top server, going 9-for-10, and led with nine assists.
Riley Reischauer contributed seven assists, while Emma Sarver led Colo-NESCO (0-6, 0-1) with six digs against the Class 1A No. 12 Raiders.
