SPORTS SHORTS: Marshalltown girls fall in double dual

WAUKEE — The Marshalltown girls swimming and diving team traveled to compete in a double dual on Tuesday against Waukee and Newton/Colfax-Mingo/Pella, where the Bobcats fell against both meets.

MHS lost to Waukee 79-22 in the Warriors’ home pool and they dropped to the Aquagirls 63-38.

Alli and Sami Trowbridge continued their run on the diving board for Marshalltown, with Alli winning the even with a 263.15 and Sami taking second with a 244.40.

In the pool, Shakira Herrera had the only event win of the day, taking first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of one minute, three seconds. Herrera also took third in the 200 freestyle with a 2:10.

Zoe Beals had a second and third place individual finish, taking second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 58 seconds and third in the 200 individual medley with a 2:36. Taylor Hrabak finished in fourth in both the 50 freestyle and 500 freestyle, while the 200 freestyle relay team of Beals, Hrabak, Herrera and Cori Jorgenson finished in third.

MHS harriers run at Cardinal Invite

NEWTON — The Marshalltown cross country teams headed down to the Westwood Golf Course to compete in the 41st annual Cardinal Invite, and both the girls and boys squads walked away with seventh place.

Luke Pedersen was the top finisher for the Bobcat boys, taking 25th place with a time of 18 minutes, 56 seconds. Javier Rodriguez finished just behind Pedersen in 26th by running a 19:02.

On the girls end, Mary Kate Gruening was the lead MHS runner, coming in 29th with a time of 23:32. Odaly Florez and Aida Almanza were the next two Bobcat finishers, coming in 36th and 37th respectively.

Redhawks volleyball sweeps Baxter

BAXTER — The Class 1A No. 8 North Tama volleyball team took down Baxter on Tuesday in three sets, 25-16, 25-17, 25-12.

Katie Kopriva paced the Redhawks (17-3) with 14 kills on the night, while Karly Jans had eight kills and three aces in the match.

Up next for North Tama is a match against Valley Lutheran in Cedar Falls on Thursday night.

BCLUW volleyball falls to G-R in five

CONRAD — The BCLUW volleyball team lost in a five-set match to NICL West Division rival Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Tuesday, 25-16, 13-25, 22-25, 26-24, 15-13.

Easton Swanson was the lead attacker on the night with 28 kills for the Comets (8-6, 1-1), while Cate Nason had 36 assists. Kaylee Goecke had 25 digs defensively against the Rebels (14-6, 2-2), while Taryn Gall had 15 and Nason had 12.

East Marshall sweeps South Hardin

ELDORA — The East Marshall volleyball team earned a road victory on Tuesday by beating NICL West Division oponent South Hardin in straight sets, 25-23, 25-15, 33-31.

Juliana Arifi had 15 kills and 15 digs in the win for the Mustangs (3-11, 1-2), while Ryleigh Thompson had a season-high 13 kills. McKenzie Hinegardner had 12 assists in the win over the Tigers (1-9, 0-4) while Maria Rasmusson had 10 assists.

Brittany Anderson was the clear leader defensively for East Marshall with an impressive 37 digs, while Cloe Kelling had five block assists.

Hinegardner had two aces off 16-17 serving, while McKaylie Coleman was 9-10 with three aces.
