SPORTS SHORTS: South Tama football beats Charles City
TAMA — The South Tama football team earned its second win of the year with a 29-20 victory over Charles City at home on Friday night.
Colton Vest led the Trojans (2-1) on the ground with 87 rushing yards, including a 22-yard touchdown scamper, and Mario Moncada added two scores on the ground as well.
Quarterback Lane Koch went 4-for-14 through the air for 133 yards with a 76-yard touchdown strike to Nick Ryan.
Vest was the leader defensively with eight solo tackles and an assist, while Moncada had seven solo tackles and four assists. Brady Fritz also chipped in an interception of Charles City quarterback Mike Cranshaw, while STC forced five fumbles from the Comets (1-2).
Cranshaw finished 6-for-12 for 76 yards and that interception, while he also led Charles City in rushing with 67 yards off 15 carries.
AGWSR goes 1-4 at Tigers’ tourney
ELDORA — The AGWSR volleyball team earned its second win of the season on Saturday in the South Hardin Tournament, but the Cougars finished the day at 1-4.
AGWSR’s sole win came against tournament-host South Hardin, 21-19, 21-16, but then the Cougars lost to Forest City (21-14, 21-11), Oelwein (21-11, 21-18), and twice to Grand View Christian — once in pool play (21-12, 21-12) and again in bracketed play (23-21,21-15).
Rachel Sicard was the lead attacker on the day with 23 kills, and she led the Cougars defensively with 33 digs. Mandy Willems and Taylor Sperfslage each had 32 digs in the tournament, while Willems led in assists with 46.
Meskwaki runners go to Benton Invite
ATKINS — The Meskwaki boys’ cross country team had three runners compete in the Benton Community Invite on Saturday afternoon.
Micah Youngbear was the top finisher for the Warriors, coming in 60th with a time of 29 minutes, 2 seconds, while Romeo Buffalo took 61st and Jaycob Bear finished 62nd.
