SPORTS SHORTS: Trojans take 6th at Waukee tourney

WAUKEE — The West Marshall volleyball team faced some tough teams down south on Saturday in the Waukee Tournament, eventually going 1-4 on the day and taking sixth out of the eight teams in attendance.

The Trojans (12-6) beat Des Moines Lincoln in three sets, 19-21, 21-10, 17-15, while losing to Class 5A No. 11 Indianola (15-21, 21-16, 15-6), No. 13 Waukee (13-21, 21-16, 15-6), Class 4A No. 9 Sergeant Bluff-Luton (21-9, 21-6), and Des Moines Roosevelt (25-20, 25-23).

Lexi Keigan led the way offensively for West Marshall with 21 kills and she led defensively with 34 digs in the tournament. Emma deNeui had 33 digs on the day, while Grace Porter was the lead assister with 44.

The Trojans host Class 2A No. 3 Grundy Center Today for a NICL West Division matchup.

Royals go 1-4 at G-R Tournament

REINBECK — The Colo-NESCO volleyball team finished the Gladbrook-Reinbeck tournament at 1-3 on Saturday, earning its second victory of the season on the day.

The Royals (2-10) defeated Waterloo Christian in pool play, 22-20, 21-11, while losing to GMG (21-17, 16-21, 15-11), tournament-host Gladbrook-Reinbeck (21-19, 21-9), and AGWSR (25-16, 25-20).

Rylee Purvis had nine kills in the tournament while Molly Barten had eight. Purvis also led in digs with 15, while Emma Sarver had 14 and Lindsey Riese had 13. Riley Reischauer led in assists with 15.

South Tama football defeated by Indee

INDEPENDENCE — The South Tama football team has been perfect at home this season but has yet to win a road game, as it fell to Independence on Friday 59-26 in its second road matchup.

Quarterback Lane Koch went 12-for-18 in the game with 259 yards and two touchdowns through the air. Tanner Probasco had 157 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries for the Trojans (2-2), while Colton Vest had three receptions for 113 yards.

Mario Moncada was the lead tackler against the Mustangs (2-3), recording 10 solo tackles and assisting on three more tackles in the loss.

South Hardin gridders fall to Eagles

DES MOINES — The South Hardin football team lost to Saydel on Friday night on the road in a 24-12 contest.

Tanner Lawrence toated the rock 24 times for the Tigers (1-4), rushing for 89 yards and two touchdowns. Dalton Lake was 8-for-21 with 105 yards passing in the game, but he also threw two interceptions to the Eagles (4-1). Tyrell Todd was the leading receiver with 60 yards off five catches.

Lawrence was the leading tackler for South Hardin as well, recording nine solo tackles in the matchup. Kolten and Kevin Rewoldt each also had five solo tackles.
