SPORTS SHORTS: West Marshall volleyball sweeps G-R

STATE CENTER — Emma Meyer compiled a team-leading eight kills to help West Marshall fight off Gladbrook-Reinbeck in NICL West Division volleyball here Tuesday night.

The Trojans (7-1, 2-0) trailed 9-0 at the start of the first set before rallying back to take the opener 25-22. West Marshall finished off the sweep with set wins of 25-13 and 25-23.

Teresa Disney contributed four kills and led the Trojan defense with three solo and two assisted blocks. Morgan Schuh stepped into the Libero role and topped her team’s chart with 16 digs as well as 18-for-20 serving with an ace.

Grace Porter had 18 assists and eight digs, and Hana Hohnstein had seven assists, nine digs and was 8-for-9 serving.

No statistics were available as of press time for Gladbrook-Reinbeck (5-5, 0-2).

GMG netters win Iowa Star opener

GARWIN — The GMG volleyball team opened Iowa Star Conference play with a 3-1 win against Clarksville on Tuesday, prevailing 25-17, 25-20, 21-25, 25-17.

Peyton Gallentine led the host Wolverines with 12 kills and three blocks, while McKensie Vaske added 10 kills and finished 25-for-26 serving with five aces. Tory Novotny had seven kills and five digs, and Mable Dieleman finished with six kills. Madi Krull amassed 32 assists.

Eve Gallentine ended the night 24-for-24 serving with four aces to go with five digs, and Vaske led the Wolverines (2-4, 1-0) with eight digs in the victory over Clarksville (1-2, 1-1).

Spartans take down East Marshall

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center volleyball team logged its 55th-straight NICL West Division victory by beating East Marshall in three sets, 25-9, 25-10, 25-8, on Tuesday night.

The Spartans (10-0, 2-0), who have won the last eight NICL West titles, charted their 10th consecutive league sweep.

For East Marshall (1-6, 0-1), Cloe Kelling and Juliana Arifi led the way with four kills apiece. Amber Martenson chipped in one kill as well. McKenzie Hinegardner finished with five assists and Maria Rasmusson added two more.

Brittany Anderson led the Mustang defense with 11 digs, while Genesis Wanatee had four digs and was 6-for-6 serving with an ace. Arifi had two of the team’s five blocks.

Comet volleyball falls to Columbus

WATERLOO — The BCLUW volleyball team dropped a match to Class 3A No. 7 Waterloo Columbus on Tuesday on the road, 25-9, 25-10, 25-9.

Easton Swanson was the leader offensively for the Comets (7-5) with 12 kills, while Cate Nason had 15 assists. Kaylee Goecke took the lead defensively with 10 digs, while Swanson had a team-high three blocks. Kennedy Williams contributed two blocks.

AGWSR nets first win at South Hardin

ELDORA — The AGWSR volleyball team earned its first win of the year with a three-set sweep of South Hardin on Tuesday night.

The Cougars (1-5) beat the Tigers (0-2) 25-20, 25-19, 25-23 in NICL West Division play.

Taryan Barrick led the way offensively for AGWSR with eight kills, while Taylor Sperfslage had five and Rachel Sicard and Makenna Kuper each chipped in four. Mandy Willems handed out 16 assists, while Willems and Sicard each had 10 digs defensively.

Third-ranked Reivers sweep aside MCC

COUNCIL BLUFFS — Third-ranked Iowa Western swept aside the Marshalltown Community College volleyball team in straight sets here Tuesday night, winning 25-11, 25-12, 25-11.

The Tigers (7-4, 0-1) return to action with a home match on Sunday afternoon, entertaining the William Penn junior varsity at 1 p.m. in Marshalltown.
