Waukee stops Bobcats’ season-long win streak

ANKENY — The rain came and washed the Bobcats’ unbeaten season away.

The Marshalltown boys’ golf team came up short for the first time this fall, finishing second to Waukee at Monday’s Valley Classic at Briarwood Golf Club, 293-298.

The Bobcats, who had won all five duals and three tournaments prior to Monday’s tournament, failed to place a golfer inside the top eight individually and came up short in the team standings. Waukee was led by the meet medalist Griffin Parker, who shot a 4-under-par 68, while MHS was without a top-two finisher for the first time all season.

“To have six guys [shoot] 76 or better is going to win a lot of tournaments, but we got beat by a great round from Waukee,” said Marshalltown head coach Lucas Johnson. “They outplayed us and deserved the win.”

The Bobcats’ four scoring golfers each shot either 74 or 75, and the team’s non-counting scores were both 76s. Nate Vance and Mason Reid earned medals for finishing ninth and 10th, respectively, with their 2-over-par rounds of 74, while Luke Appel (13th) and Tate Carlson (14th) both finished in with 75s. Cole Davis and JD Pollard came in with 76s.

“Our guys had about six holes in when we had a heavy downpour that eventually included lightning and suspended play for about 40 minutes,” Johnson said. “For some guys, it came at the right time and gave them a chance to refocus after some rough holes.”

Johnson said that Vance needed the reprieve after sending back-to-back tee shots out of bounds during the deluge.

“I was especially proud of the way he came back, playing 2-under on his final 12 holes of the day after the break,” Johnson added.

Each Bobcat golfer had at least two birdies during the round, including three for the sophomore Reid in his first season of varsity.

“Mason Reid’s round was also impressive given that he was playing his first competitive round at Briarwood,” Johnson said. “His putter got hot at the Joe August on Friday and it stayed that way as he only had 28 total putts on what can be some tricky greens.”

The Bobcats are scheduled to close out the regular season with Wednesday’s Southeast Polk Invite at Copper Creek Golf Club in Pleasant Hill.
