Beals is lone state swim qualifier for Bobcats
INDIANOLA — After placing two divers in the state meet on Thursday, it was the swimmers turn for the Marshalltown swimming and diving team to earn some qualifications, and senior Zoe Beals did just that.
Beals finished third in the 50-yard freestyle race in the regional meet with a time of 25.09 seconds to earn a state qualification, just nudging out Kathryn Landhuis from Atlantic by .07 seconds.
Beals enters the state meet as the 21st seed, though less than a second separates her and the sixth-seed time from Mary Sweetman of Dowling Catholic.
As a team, the Bobcats finished in fifth place at the regional meet with a score of 229, almost 90 points ahead of sixth-place finisher Grinnell.
Both Shakira Herrera in the 100 butterfly and the 200 free relay team of Taylor Hrabak, Beals, Herrera and Cori Jorgenson narrowly missed out on a state qualification.
Herrera finished in sixth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:02.36, just 1.33 seconds away from a state qualification. The 200 free relay team was even closer, finishing fourth with a time of 1:44.67, half a second away from earning a state nod.
