Redhawks rally past Montezuma in 5

TRAER — North Tama’s dynamic duo of Katie Kopriva and Karly Jans combined for 47 of their team’s 58 kills as the No. 8 Redhawks rallied past No. 11 Montezuma for a five-set win in Thursday’s Class 1A Region 4 semifinal.

Kopriva had 24 kills and Jans added 23 as the Redhawks (28-7) moved to within one win of the school’s first-ever state tournament appearance, beating the Braves 23-25, 19-25, 25-17, 25-5, 15-13.

Sophomore setter Isabel Sierra racked up 48 assists as North Tama traveled the longest leg of the comeback trail. Lydia Schafer chipped in six kills for the Redhawk attack.

Jans and Kopriva both had two solo blocks while Carlie Gorder and Abby Deboef had one each. Sophomore libero Takoa Kopriva led the Redhawk defense with 29 digs, Carissa Calderwood had 17 and Katelyn Kucera added 11. North Tama served a combined 103-for-106 with eight aces, led by Kucera’s 32-for-34, five-ace performance.

North Tama will face Coon Rapids-Bayard in Tuesday’s regional final at 7 p.m. at Nevada High School.
