REGIONAL VOLLEYBALL: Comets prevail over Plainsmen in 5

BELLE PLAINE — The BCLUW volleyball team moved on to the Class 2A Region 5 semifinals with a five-set win over Belle Plaine on Monday, 23-25, 25-22, 11-25, 32-30, 15-9.

The Comets (21-15) had a 23-18 lead in the fourth set to force a fifth, but the Plainsmen (18-9) fought all the way back until BCLUW finally came away with the 32-30 game victory.

Easton Swanson led the way offensively for the Comets with 18 kills, followed by Madison Ubben with 12 and Kennedy Williams with eight. Both marks for Ubben and Williams were season highs for kills.

Defensively, Swanson also took the lead with 21 digs, while Cate Nason had 11. Nason also had 37 assists in the win against the Plainsmen.

BCLUW takes on NICL West rival Grundy Center at 7 p.m. Thursday in Grundy Center.

GMG eliminated from playoffs by Baxter

GARWIN — The GMG volleyball team was ousted from Class 1A Region 3 play by Baxter on Monday in a four-set match, losing 25-15, 25-11, 24-26, 25-16.

After falling in the first two sets, the Wolverines (8-17) started off the third set on a 7-0 run but found themselves down 19-14 and on the brink of elimination before rallying to win the set and extend their season.

McKensie Vaske and Peyton Gallentine each had six kills offensively for the Wolverines, while Tory Novotny finished just behind them with five. Madi Krull had 19 assists in the loss to the Bolts (14-13) and Vaske and Novotny each had nine digs for GMG, followed by Eve Gallentine with eight and Krull with seven.
