SPORTS SHORTS: Marshalltown Y hosting swim regional

As the Marshalltown High School girls’ swimming team travels to Indianola for its regional meet Saturday, nine other teams will be visiting the Marshalltown YMCA/YWCA for theirs.

Due to a mechanical issue with Southeast Polk’s pool, the Rams’ regional meet will be held in Marshalltown at noon Saturday, the Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union announced.

The meet will include Des Moines Lincoln, Des Moines North, Iowa City High, Iowa City West, Oskaloosa, Ottumwa, Southeast Polk, Waukee and Williamsburg, as swimmers compete for a chance to return to Marshalltown one week later for the season-ending state meet.

MCC volleyball falls to Southeastern

WEST BURLINGTON — The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team lost a match to Southeastern Community College in four sets on Monday night, 26-24, 25-9, 14-25, 25-14.

The last two times the Tigers (18-13) and Blackhawks (23-14) faced off, Southeastern came away with a three-set sweep. Though his girls did better than the last two times they played the Blackhawks, MCC head coach Justin Hoskins said the team had a hard time overcoming some bad play by a few individuals.

“We simply struggled to play well tonight,” Hoskins said. “We had individuals struggle for stretches and as a team, instead of picking each other up, the struggles became contagious. We talked in the locker room and acknowledged that we won’t always play our best individually or as a team, but we need to learn how to make a positive contribution even when we’re not on our ‘A’ game. Hopefully we can use tonight as a lesson moving forward and benefit from it in the long run.”

The Tigers will look to end a four-match losing skid on Friday when they head to Fort Dodge to face Iowa Central at 7 p.m.
