SPORTS SHORTS: MCC soccer players honored by league
Two players from the Marshalltown Community College men’s soccer team earned weekly honors recently, as goalkeeper Juan Gonzalez was named both the NJCAA and ICCAC Goalie of the Week and Roger De la Villa was tabbed as the ICCAC Field Player of the Week.
Gonzalez is the first Tiger to be recognized by the NJCAA this season for its weekly awards, as he’s coming off a week where he recorded four saves and held previously No. 5 Indian Hills to one goal in MCC’s 2-1 win over the Warriors.
De la Villa scored the deciding goal against Indian Hills, part of why he was named as the best non-goalie in the ICCAC last week. He also scored in Tuesday’s 7-2 win over Northeast Community College.
The No. 9 Tigers travel to No. 12 Iowa Western on Saturday for a battle to determine the top seed in the ICCAC heading into the postseason.

On Tuesday night, Paul Ainley sunk a hole-in-one on the par-3 18th hole at the American Legion Memorial Golf Course.
Ainley hit a 4-iron off the tee and his wife, LeeAnn, was the witness to his shot.
