SPORTS SHORTS: Spartans volleyball sweeps AGWSR

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center volleyball team earned another NICL West Division win on Tuesday with a three-set sweep over AGWSR, 25-15, 25-12, 25-18.

Hailey Wallis was the top attacker on the day for the Spartans (29-4, 5-0) with 10 kills, while Landry Luhring put down nine and Kylie Willis had seven kills. Sydney Mathews led in assists for Grundy Center with 16, followed closely by Emerson Kracht with 14, and Luhring led defensively with 11 digs.

Makenna Kuper and Rachel Sicard each had three kills to lead the Cougars (5-14, 1-4), while Taylor Sperfslage had 10 digs to lead defensively.

With the win, Grundy Center improves its streak of NICL West set wins to 40 and match wins to 58. The Spartans also clinch at least a share of their ninth-straight NICL West title.

North Tama takes down GMG in three

GARWIN — The North Tama volleyball team won a Iowa Star South Division matchup over GMG on Tuesday night in three sets, 25-7, 25-13, 25-16.

Katie Kopriva was the top-offensive threat for the Redhawks (21-6, 6-0) with 13 kills, followed closely by Karly Jans with 12. Takoa Kopriva had 18 digs in the match against the Wolverines (8-15, 3-4), while Isabel Sierra had 26 assists.

South Hardin boys 2nd at Eagle Grove

EAGLE GROVE — The South Hardin cross country team continues to grow stronger as the season progresses, with the Tigers showing well at the Dick Bell Invitational at the Eagle Grove Country Club on Tuesday.

ZaKee Newman and Jacob VanderWilt finished in third and fourth respectively, with Newman’s time of 18 minutes, seven seconds just nudging out VanderWilt’s time of 18:08. As a team, the Tiger boys took second with a score of 45. Six South Hardin boys finished in the top 25, with Kolby Winter joining Newman and VanderWilt in the top 10 with his time of 18:24 to place 10th.

On the girls end, South Hardin didn’t have enough to produce a team score but the Tiger girls still ran well. Chloe Webb finished in ninth place with a time of 22:36, while Jordan Carr ran a 23:40 to take 25th.
