SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat boys fundraiser at Pizza Ranch

The Marshalltown boys basketball team will be bussing tables and serving food on Monday at the Pizza Ranch in Marshalltown.

Part of the proceeds from the Bobcats’ work will go to support the team as well as community service and outreach.

The team will be at Pizza Ranch from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday.

UNI’s Hook named MVC scholar athlete

ST. LOUIS — UNI senior Heather Hook has been named an honorable mention member of the 2017 Missouri Valley Conference Volleyball Scholar-Athlete Team.

Hook currently boasts a 3.33 grade point average in her studies, majoring in finance in economics. She also ranks fourth in the nation in total assists with 1,366 and leads the MVC in assists per set with 11.68.

Only 44 student athletes are nominated for the MVC scholar-athlete team. The criterion for the honor is at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and at participation in at least 75 percent of regular season matches.

Hook and the Panther have a first-round bye in the MVC tournament, starting Thursday, and they take on the winner of Illinois State and Valparaiso on Friday, starting at 7:30 p.m in Normal, Ill.

Dinsdale selected to ICCAC 2nd team

AMES — Iowa Western Community College linebacker and former Gladbrook-Reinbeck standout Colton Dinsdale was selected to the all-Iowa Community College Athletic Conference football second team at the conclusion of the regular season.

Dinsdale finished the year fifth in tackling for the Reivers with 42 total tackles, and he added a sack and an interception. Iowa Western’s defense was tops in the ICCAC, allowing only 15.9 points per game and 283.5 yards per game.

Dinsdale will be attending the University of Iowa as a preferred walk-on next season, where he will compete for a spot at linebacker.

Third-ranked Iowa Western takes on No. 5 Northwest Mississippi (8-2) in the Graphic Edge Bowl on Dec. 3 at the UNI-Dome in Dinsdale’s final game with the Reivers.

Schipper named all-Iowa Conference

CEDAR RAPIDS — In his final season playing football for Wartburg College, AGWSR graduate Derek Schipper was selected to the all-Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first team as an offensive lineman.

Schipper played right guard for an offensive line that helped rack up 463.6 yards per game in conference play. He was also a key cog in the Knights averaging 207.9 yards per game on the ground.

Wartburg is currently in the NCAA Division III playoffs, where the Knights have advanced to the Sweet 16 after defeating Franklin College in the first round, 35-34. Wartburg hosts Trine College on Saturday at noon.

ISU’s Lazard headed to Senior Bowl

AMES — Iowa State senior wide receiver Allen Lazard has accepted an invitation to play in the Reese’s Senior Bowl, held Jan. 27 in Mobile, Ala.

Lazard is one of the greatest receivers in Iowa State history, ranking No. 1 in career receptions (225), receiving yards (3,123) and 100-yard receiving games (11).

Lazard’s 25 career touchdown catches is second in school history and he’s caught a pass in all 46 games of his career, the nation’s longest active streak among current FBS players.

He was a first team all-Big 12 selection in 2016 and was a member of the Biletnikoff Award and Senior Class Award watch lists during the season. He is also the first Senior Bowl attendee for the Cyclones since tight end E.J. Bibbs represented Iowa State in 2014.
