Bobcat boys swimmers sweep East, Oskaloosa

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown boys’ swimming team made off with eight of 11 event titles in taking both ends of a double-dual against Oskaloosa and host Des Moines East on Thursday night.

The Bobcats improved to 4-1 with the wins heading into Saturday’s Toreador Relays at Boone to cap a three-meet week. MHS captured a 67-26 victory over Oskaloosa and a 57-37 win against a Des Moines East squad that topped the Bobcats by two points a season ago.

“Coach (Sam) Backstrom and I are very encouraged with how this meet went with it being in the middle of a ragged week,” said MHS head coach Mike Loupee. “The guys continue working hard. Everything goes down a lot easier when you’re winning — the yards are not so long. This is one of the better starts we’ve had the last several years.”

Gage Petty, Ryne Downey and Carson Beals each scored a pair of gold medals for Marshalltown in this meet. Petty picked up the top spot on the podium with wins in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100 backstroke, while Downey beat the field to the wall in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events. Beals banked first place in the 200 individual medley as well as the 500 freestyle.

Downey posted two season-best times in his wins, clocking 22.80 seconds in the 50 and 51.91 in the 100, and Beals did the same in the IM (2:19.55) and the 500 (5:29.90).

The Bobcats also won two of three relay races, taking both freestyle events. Caleb Summers, Petty, Brad Barkema and Downey earned the top spot in the 200 freestyle relay in a combined time of 1:35.13, while Beals, Nash Perisho, Downey and Petty picked up first-place points with a clocking of 3:33.05.
