Carleton carries Cyclones past Kansas in OT, 71-69

AMES — Bridget Carleton helped the Iowa State women’s basketball team erase a late deficit and scored all of the Cyclones’ points in overtime for a 71-69 victory over Kansas in Thursday’s Big 12 Conference opener at Hilton Coliseum.

Carleton scored Iowa State’s last six points of regulation to put the Cyclones in front 64-61 with 19 seconds remaining, but Kylee Kopatich breathed new life into the Jayhawks with her 3-pointer with 10 seconds left. ISU turned the ball over on its ensuing possession but did not surrender a shot, and then Carleton took over in the extra period.

The junior singlehandedly lifted Iowa State to the win, scoring all seven points in overtime. The Cyclones led by as many as six in the extra period and held off the Jayhawk comeback, including another Kopatich 3-point attempt as time expired.

Carleton finished with a game-high 30 points and eclipsed 1,000 for her career. She also led Iowa State with nine rebounds and three assists. Bride Kennedy-Hopoate added 15 points and six boards off the bench for ISU (7-5, 1-0).

Christalah Lyons led Kansas (9-3, 0-1) with 19 points and six assists. Kopatich finished with a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Iowa State returns to Hilton Coliseum on Sunday to host Oklahoma in a 2 p.m. contest.
