Cyclones hit 11 triples to turn back Nicholls St

AMES — The Iowa State women’s basketball team survived Nicholls State’s best shot and then countered with a haymaker of its own.

The Cyclones rattled off a 20-0 run during the third quarter to chase off the Colonels in a 75-47 victory on Thursday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum.

Iowa State (6-5) outscored Nicholls State 29-6 in the third quarter to turn an eight-point halftime advantage into a rout. The Colonels (5-6) utilized a 10-0 spurt late in the second quarter to close to within double-digits of ISU before the Cyclones started eliminating turnovers and making 3-pointers.

Emily Durr and Madison Wise both had a pair of treys during Iowa State’s fateful breakout in the third quarter to send the Cyclones into the holiday break with a three-game winning streak.

“With the exception of five minutes in the second quarter we were fine,” said Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly. “We did what we needed to do. In the last three games we needed to win and we did, and like everyone else it’s time for a bit of a break.”

The Cyclones crack open their Big 12 Conference schedule on Dec. 28 with a home game against Kansas.

Wise finished with a game-high 18 points to lead Iowa State, while Durr ended with 14. Both made four 3-pointers in the win. Bride Kennedy-Hopoate contributed 11 points off the bench, Bridget Carleton came away with 10 points, and Kristin Scott added eight points and a team-leading 10 boards.

As a team the Cyclones shot 11-for-28 from 3-point land.

Paige Williams led Nicholls State with 13 points.
