Drake women turn back Cyclones 83-80

DES MOINES — The Drake University women’s basketball team won a thriller over Iowa State on Thursday, as Bulldogs sophomore Becca Hittner converted a three-point play with two seconds left to give them an 83-80 win over the Cyclones.

Hittner’s eventual game winner came on a driving layup in the land as she banked it in and Iowa State’s Bridget Carlton was called for a blocking foul. After hitting the free throw, Hittner then blocked a 3-point attempt by Carlton as time expired to secure the win for Drake (4-3).

Sara Rhine led the Bulldogs with 24 points in the win, while Maddy Dean chipped in 16 points off the bench and Sammie Bachrodt netted 12.

Emily Durr was the top scorer for Iowa State with 21 points off a 5-for-11 performance from behind the arc. Carlton had 19 in the loss as she was battling foul trouble all night, and Adriana Camber had 16 while going 4-for-5 from 3-point land.

The Bulldogs return to action on Sunday when they host Creighton, while heads to Nashville to take on Vanderbilt on Saturday.
