Spartans tip Trojans in OT showdown

STATE CENTER — The Class 2A No. 9 Grundy Center girls’ basketball team used balanced scoring and steady defense to defeat 3A No. 11 West Marshall in overtime, prevailing 44-41 in Tuesday’s clash between two of last year’s three co-champions.

Brooke Flater led the visiting Spartans (6-0, 4-0) with 10 points, Kylie Willis added nine points and both Reegan Zinkula and Sarah Lindeman came away with eight points.

Isabelle Gradwell led all scorers with 19 points to pace West Marshall (5-2, 1-2), which has now lost as many league games as all of last season. Teresa Disney pitched in with 10 points, Kayla Cripps had eight and Renae Schaper added four. Gradwell and Schaper shared team-high honors with seven rebounds.

West Marshall goes to Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Friday, while Grundy Center visits 1A No. 13 AGWSR. The Cougars, who also shared last year’s NICL West crown, are 6-0 overall and 4-0 in division play just like the Spartans.
