SPORTS SHORTS: North Polk tracks down West Marshall
ALLEMAN — Isabelle Gradwell’s big night was not enough to offset the dual threat of North Polk’s Maggie Phipps and Jaedon Murphy as the Class 3A No. 8 Comets edged the No. 15 Trojans 52-48 in Thursday’s non-conference girls’ basketball contest.
Phipps had 19 points and Murphy had 18, including five free throws down the stretch to help North Polk (9-1) notch its sixth-straight win. The Comets trailed 37-31 going into the fourth quarter before outscoring the visiting Trojans 21-11 in the final period.
Gradwell scored a career-high 31 points to lead West Marshall (8-2), but it wasn’t enough on this night. She also shared team-high honors with Kayla Cripps in collecting seven rebounds.
Ninth-ranked Cougars whip Warriors
ACKLEY — The AGWSR girls basketball team entered the winter break at a perfect 9-0 after a 75-38 win over Meskwaki on Thursday.
The Cougars (9-0) raced out to a 28-6 lead after the first quarter and held a 51-17 advantage at the half, their second-straight game with 50 or more points in the first half.
Mandy Willems led AGWSR yet again in points with 21, and she had six assists, seven assists and four blocks. Aubrie Fisher had 13 points to come in second for the Cougars.
Tori Lasley led the Warriors (4-3) with 12 points and Delicia Guevara came in just behind with seven.
Pope powers Trojans at North Polk
ALLEMAN — Peyton Pope put up 20 points, eight rebounds and three steals to lead the West Marshall boys’ basketball team past North Polk 65-59 on Thursday night.
Alex Dickey added 13 points and Cameron Bannister had 11 more for the Trojans (6-3), who led by 14 going into the fourth quarter before the final margin dwinled to six.
Caleb Lomica and Colten Parkins combined to score all 23 North Polk points in the fourth quarter, and the duo ended with 52 of the team’s 59 points in the loss. Parkins finished with 28 points and Lomica had 24.
Joe Halverson chipped in with seven points and a team-leading nine rebounds for West Marshall, while Beau Coberley added six points and three assists.
Mustang wrestling goes 0-3 in quad
LA PORTE CITY — The East Marshall/GMG wrestling team went 0-3 in a quadrangular, falling to Denver 75-3, Don Bosco 83-0 and host Union 54-21.
Sam Bandstra had the only win against Denver by an 11-8 decision in his 132-pound match over Alex Krabbenhoft, and no Mustangs (5-8, 4-4) won against Don Bosco.
Against Union, Dawson Riemenschneider pinned Jacob Hill in the first minute of their match at 138, Noah Bandstra won by forfeit at 170, Connor Murty won by a 6-3 decision over Hunter Klima at 182 and Tayte Nauman won his heavyweight match over Matthew Millard via a second-round pin.
