Bobcat boys fall to Cedar Falls, 75-42

CEDAR FALLS — It was an uphill battle all night for the Marshalltown boys basketball team on Saturday night, as the Bobcats suffered their worst loss of the season to Cedar Falls, 75-42.

Tigers leading scorer AJ Green was effective from the onset, as the UNI signee had 24 points to lead Cedar Falls. Marshalltown assistant coach Todd Beare said Green started the game off hot, which led to an early deficit for MHS.

“AJ Green went off in the first quarter for 13 points, and they kind of jumped on us with a lot of ball pressure and turnovers. End of the first it was 21-7,” Beare said.

The boys weren’t the only ones to lose to Cedar Falls, as the Bobcat girls lost to the Tigers as well, 72-13.

Luke Appel and Jacob Smith each led the Marshalltown (4-7) boys with nine points, while Conner Beaty and Austin Shomo each had five.

Cedar Falls (8-3) had two other players in double figures aside from Green, with Jackson Frericks going for 13 points and Ben Gerdes dropping 14.

Beare said his guys never gave up against the Tigers, even knocking the lead down to single digits in the third quarter, but eventually playing on the road for a fifth-straigth game caught up to the Bobcats.

“They are a good quality team, our guys played hard and its never a lack of effort, we were up against a real tough opponent tonight,” he said. “Its a tough stretch, we are just trying to keep persevering and moving on.”

Marshalltown has one more game on the road on Tuesday at Ames, then it finally return back to the friendly confines of the Roundhouse for a home match against Urbandale.
