SPORTS SHORTS: Mustang matmen split NICL pair

DIKE — The East Marshall/GMG wrestling team split a pair of closely contested North Iowa Cedar League duals on Thursday, falling 36-34 to Class 1A No. 9 Wapsie Valley before beating Dike-New Hartford 40-39.

A closing pin for Sam Bandstra at 138 pounds lifted the Mustangs (8-9, 6-5) to the victory over Dike-New Hartford. East Marshall/GMG trailed 39-28 before back-to-back pins by Joshua Terrones at 132 and Bandstra at 138 rallied the Mustangs to the win.

Bandstra and Cole Nauman (152) won both of their contested matches to lead the Mustangs. Noah Bandstra, ranked 10th in 2A by IAwrestle.com, pinned Dike-New Hartford’s Nathan Graves in his only match.

Carson Burchland (120) and Conner Murty (182) both added pins in the victory over Dike-New Hartford and Dawson Riemenschneider scored a major decision at 145.

No. 10 Mustangs blow out Iowa Valley

LE GRAND — The Class 2A No. 10 East Marshall boys basketball team ripped off yet another win on Thursday as it rolled over Iowa Valley, 68-24.

Zaine Leedom was the top scorer for the Mustangs (12-0) with 19 points though Zane Johnson wasn’t far behind with 17 of his own.

No Tiger player reached double digits as Josh Konicek led them in scoring with seven points.

Eighth-ranked Spartans stifle Tripoli

TRIPOLI — The Class 2A No. 8 Grundy Center girls basketball team walked away with an easy win on the road on Thursday night, downing Tripoli 61-35.

It was an even scoring day for the Spartans (13-1), as Kylie Willis led the team in scoring with 12 points, followed by Reegan Zinkula with nine and Madison McMartin, Sydney Matthews and Brooke Flater each with six.
