State bowling meet moved to Waterloo
December fire destroyed Plaza Lanes in DSM
Cadillac Lanes in Waterloo has been tabbed as the site for the 2018 Iowa High School State Bowling Championships, the Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union announced jointly on Wednesday.
The move to Waterloo comes after the former state venue, Plaza Lanes in Des Moines, was destroyed in a fire on December 18.
“While we are sad Plaza Lanes suffered last month’s fire, we appreciate the Iowa Bowling Proprietors Association helping us identify possible sites for the 2018 state bowling tournament,” IHSAA Executive Director Alan Beste stated in the associations’ press release. “We appreciate Cadillac Lanes providing their facility to us so we can continue to host a co-ed state tournament.”
“We are pleased that the proprietors at Cadillac Lanes have made their facility available for the state bowling meet,” IGHSAU Executive Director Jean Berger stated in a press release. “Cadillac Lanes’ size will allow allow the co-ed meet to continue with no changes in the format from previous tournaments while accommodating all of the fans.”
The State Bowling Championships is a three-day event that begins with the Class 1A Tournament taking place Monday, Feb. 19. Class 2A will bowl on Tuesday, Feb. 20, and Class 3A Wednesday, Feb. 21. Start time for all three meets is 10 a.m.
The move is a temporary solution, as both organizations plan to move the meet back to Des Moines next year when Plaza Lanes has been rebuilt.
