The Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team ended a four-game losing streak on Monday by downing the Central College junior varsity squad at the Student Activity Center, 61-57.

The Tigers (9-17) owned a seven-point lead at halftime over the Dutch, but Central College wouldn’t quite go away, forcing MCC to hold them off down the stretch.

Loralei Siliga led the Tigers in scoring with 17 points, while Sarah Kavanh hit from behind the 3-point line three times in the first five minutes on her way to finishing with 13 points, her second best effort of the season.

Alyssa Roth finished just outside of double digits with nine points, while Maria Cruz Uceda led the way in rebounding with eight.

Head coach Steve Garber said this wasn’t his girls’ cleanest win of the season, but they did what was necessary to get the victory.

“I don’t think we played our best basketball tonight but we were able to limit our turnovers and created a few turnovers,” Garber said.

Star Smith was Central’s leading scorer with 19 points off the bench, while Emily Hay finished with 12.

Up next for the MCC women is its final home game of the year, as the Tigers take on the Grand View University junior varsity starting at 6 p.m. on Thursday at the Student Activity Center.
