Tigers rip Mount Mercy in final home game

Tony Smith

The Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team sent its seniors out strong in its final home game of the year on Monday, downing the Mount Mercy College junior varsity 86-47.

The Tigers (17-10) had a solid first half, jumping out to a 51-18 lead after the first 20 minutes against the Mustangs. Even though it was sophomore night, freshman Kelton Edwards stole the show by dropping in 20 points off the bench for MCC. Edwards did not miss a shot, going 8-for-8 including a 3-for-3 mark from behind the 3-point line. Sophomore Berk Karadan followd with15 points and led in rebounds with eight, while fellow sophomore and Marshalltown native Tony Smith was given a start and he finished second in rebounds with seven.

There was some local flavor on the opposite side as well, with Colo-NESCO graduate Brady Stoeffler starting for Mount Mercy and finishing with nine points, second only to Adam Van Oort’s 13.

The Tigers have a week off now before they hit the road next Tuesday to head down to Sedalia, Mo., to face off with State Fair Community College.
