SPORTS SHORTS: Mustangs mow down South Hardin
ELDORA — An 11-run eruption in the fourth inning led to a sixth-straight win to start the season for the Class 2A No. 11 East Marshall softball team, which walloped South Hardin 14-0 in Tuesday’s NICL West Division opener for both teams.
Mustang pitchers Kodie Hoskey and Reagan McIlrath combined on a two-hit shutout in the four-inning win, walking none while striking out four.
East Marshall led 3-0 before scoring 11 times in the top of the fourth.
Ellen Hungerford led the Mustang bats going 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored. Maria Rasmusson was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs and three RBIs, while Hannah Birks finished 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBIs.
McIlrath added a double of her own and scored twice, while Madison Farrington plated a pair. Juliana Arifi singled and scored, and Kayla Mommer chipped in with a pinch-hit, run-scoring single.
East Marshall continues its 12-game road trip to start the season with tonight’s game against reigning NICL West champion BCLUW in Conrad.
Redhawks edge GMG softball squad
GREEN MOUNTAIN — The North Tama softball team scored its first win of the season, sneaking past GMG 8-7 in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference clash.
The Redhawks (1-5) pulled ahead with three runs in both the second and fourth innings before holding off GMG’s comeback. The Wolverines (1-3) scored three times in the sixth to get within one.
Zoe Duncan had four hits to lead GMG offensively, driving in a run as well. Kelsey Vaverka had a triple to go with two RBIs, while Sidney Catherwood had two hits and two RBIs. Madi Krull finished 2-for-3 at the plate and Angle Schewe added a double.
Vaverka took the loss in the circle, allowing seven earned runs on four hits while walking 13 and striking out 10.
East Marshall baseball falls to Nevada
GILMAN — The East Marshall baseball team lost a non-conference game against Nevada on Tuesday, 22-10 in five innings.
Logan Andrews took the loss for the Mustangs (1-5), while as a staff East Marshall gave up 22 walks.
Zane Johnson was effective at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three runs, while Kam Hoskins also finished 2-for-3 with double and an RBI. Justin Ridout knocked in a three-run home run as well for the Mustangs.
East Marshall will travel to Beaman today for a NICL West showdown with BCLUW, starting at 7:30 p.m.
Trojans take down Saydel in 5 innings
DES MOINES — The West Marshall softball team earned a 2-0 road victory over Saydel on Tuesday evening.
Loran Nicholson went the distance for the Trojans (2-2), allowing just four hits and no runs while striking out three in five innings before the game was called.
Kayla Cripps went 2-for-3 with a run in the win for West Marshall, while Karisa Blocker also finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Trojans go for three straight on Thursday when they welcome in Grundy Center for a NICL West Division game, starting at 7:45 p.m.
