Teske first Tiger tennis qualifier in 10 years

South Hardin junior Cauy Teske became the first Tiger boy to qaulify for the state tennis tournament on Wednesday when he finished second in the singles bracket of the Class 1A district meet at Boone.

Teske had a test to start the day when he was slated to face Jackson Zehr, the No. 2 overall seed, but he prevailed in three sets to continue his day.

In the second round, Teske went up against Angel Meijon from Iowa Falls-Alden and pulled out a close 6-4, 7-6, to move into the semifinals and set up a chance for a state qualification.

Teske continued to improve as the day went on, with his biggest win coming in the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-1, decision over Colin Anderson from Ballard.

After earning the first state qualification for the Tigers since 2008, Teske still had the championship match to contend with. Unfortunately the magic ran out just shy of a district title, as he lost to Peter Walkwitz of Saydel in a 6-1, 6-2, match to finish as the district runner-up.

The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys tennis team also had a good day in its district meet at Waterloo. The Spartans earned a second-straight trip to the team substate competition with a third-place showing at Byrnes Park Tennis Center. Sage Klar had the best placing for Grundy Center, finishing fourth in singles.

The Spartans will now travel to Aplington-Parkersburg on Saturday for a preliminary substate dual, starting at 9 a.m.
