Vest medals, MHS third at conference

Kassy Vest and Emma Younkin

MASON CITY — Absent of anything below par on her card, Marshalltown senior Kassy Vest saved her first such score for the right time.

A birdie 3 on the par-4 finishing hole at Mason City Country Club earned Vest medalist honors at the CIML Iowa Conference Meet on Thursday, helping the Bobcats secure second place in the six-team tournament.

Vest leapfrogged Johnston’s Abbie Gault on the last hole after Gault bogeyed the 18th and Vest sunk a 6-foot birdie putt that dropped her to a 12-over-par round of 84 and first place in the conference meet.

“Kassy Vest played some outstanding golf today and found herself in a head-to-head dual with one of the best players in the conference in Johnston’s Abbie Gault,” said MHS head coach Lucas Johnson. “Down one heading into the last hole, Kassy hit a pin-seeker with her approach shot and made birdie while Gault bogeyed, giving [Vest] the conference win.

“I know that was one of her goals heading into the season, so to see her come out on top in her last regular season meet is a great confidence-boost heading into postseason play.”

The Bobcats had three golfers finish inside the top 10, earning medals for their efforts that helped them end up within 11 strokes of Johnston. The Dragons claimed the conference crown with a 388, followed by Marshalltown’s 399, and Mason City beat out Dowling Catholic for third place on a fifth-score tiebreaker after both squads shot a 426. Urbandale (449) and Fort Dodge (489) brought up the field.

MHS freshman Kyra Feldman was the next-best finisher for the Bobcats, shooting 100 to take eighth place overall. Senior Emily Hass was ninth with a 103, while sophomore Emma Younkin contributed her first counting score to the varsity squad by placing 17th with her 112.

“To have three players in the top 10 at conference is a nice achievement as a team,” said Johnson. “I was also happy to see Emma Younkin get her first counting score as a varsity player. Both her and Taylor Naughton have come a long way this season and have benefitted from the varsity experience.”

Vest, who placed 27th in Class 5A in her state tournament debut last spring, will lead Marshalltown back into the postseason with Monday’s 4A Region 3 meet at the American Legion Memorial Golf Course. Tee time in the 10-team tournament is slated for 10 a.m.
