PREP BASEBALL: Mustangs, Trojans double up on Spartans

GRUNDY CENTER — The East Marshall baseball team won on back-to-back nights for the first time this season after defeating Grundy Center 15-2 in five innings of NICL West Division action here Thursday.

The Mustangs (7-14, 5-6), who shut out Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Wednesday, met Grundy Center in the first game of the Spartans’ home doubleheader on Thursday night. West Marshall beat Grundy Center 16-4 in five innings in game two.

East Marshall racked up 16 total hits and got a three-hitter from senior right-hander Tyler DeBondt, who surrendered two unearned runs while walking one and striking out six in pitching all five innings.

Austin Elliott led off for the Mustangs and went 4-for-5 with two stolen bases and four runs scored, while Zane Johnson was 4-for-5 with two stolen bases, two runs scored and four RBIs.

Zach Jacobson went 2-for-3 with a double and four RBIs, Colton Weese was 2-for-2 with three runs scored, and Gage Hulin finished 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs to help the East Marshall offense post its second-highest scoring output of the season.

In the second game of the evening, West Marshall eighth-grader Kinnick Christensen pitched all five innings of a 16-4 victory for the Trojans. He struck out five, walked two and allowed two earned runs on three hits.

West Marshall (17-9, 8-2) got two hits and two runs scored from Alex Dickey, Ryan Reyerson and Parker Hulbert. Dickey drove in three runs, Reyerson plated two and Hulbert drove home another. Jake Tollefson had a double, two runs scored and an RBI, while Gabe Jones had a hit, scored a run and drove in three runs.

East Marshall plays tonight against South Hardin in Eldora, while East Marshall meets Gladbrook-Reinbeck for an 11 a.m. doubleheader in Reinbeck. Grundy Center (2-17, 1-9) visits BCLUW.

Colo-NESCO 16, BCLUW 6, 6 innings

BEAMAN — Four BCLUW pitchers combined to walk 20 batters and the Comets fell to Colo-NESCO 16-6 in six innings in a non-conference baseball game here Thursday night.

Colo-NESCO (11-9) scored its season-best fourth-consecutive victory after scoring 12 runs in the top of the sixth inning to come back from a 6-4 deficit. BCLUW pitching issued 14 free passes in the inning, allowing just two hits.

The Comets (10-11) outhit the visiting Royals 9-8 but couldn’t overcome the pitching woes. Blake Mann was 3-for-3 at the plate, Brad Barkema had a single, a double and three RBIs, and Troy Dolphin had two hits. Keegan Rhinehart contributed a run-scoring single and Koty Kruse added a hit for BCLUW, which goes to Grundy Center for an NICL West Division contest tonight.

LATE WEDNESDAY

Colo-NESCO 13-17, Baxter 2-2

ZEARING — The Colo-NESCO baseball team swept Iowa Star Conference opponent Baxter on Wednesday in a home doubleheader.

The Royals (10-9) took the first game, 13-2, and the second, 17-2 in four innings, over the Bolts (2-14).

Bryce Nimeyer picked up the win in game one, pitching a complete game while allowing two hits and two runs and striking out seven.

Mason Lytle and Jacob Clatt both hit home runs in the first win, with Lytle finishing 2-for-3 with four RBIs and Clatt going 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Matthew Hill was perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two doubles, four RBIs and four runs scored.

Sean Cutler was the winning pitcher in game two, throwing a complete game while allowing three hits and two runs and striking out one.

Cutler also swung the bat well, going 3-for-3 with six RBIs.

North Tama 10, Janesville 4

JANESVILLE — The North Tama baseball team earned an Iowa Star conference win over Janesville on Wednesday, 10-4.

Lance Zobel picked up the win for the Redhawks (14-7), pitching a complete game while allowing six hits and four runs and striking out five.

North Tama had 15 total hits in the win, with Tate Payne and Zobel both going 3-for-4 at the plate. Payne had two runs and two RBIs as well, while Zobel added two runs himself.

Tyler Morrison led the way in RBIs with three, while Hale Hulme had two RBIs on a 2-for-4 night.

MHS freshmen swept

The Marshalltown freshman baseball team lost a home doubleheader to Johnston on Wednesday, falling in game one, 8-6, and losing in game two, 13-6.

Carson Williams took the loss in game one, going three innings for the Bobcats and allowing eight hits and five runs while striking out three. Bennett Hageman pitched four innings of relief, allowing two hits and three runs while striking out six and walking four.

Jacob VanPelt went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Gabe Wyant finished 1-for-2 with a walk, a run and an RBI.

Joe Burnes took the loss in game two, allowing six hits and six runs in four innings while striking out four and walking two. Williams had a good outing at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Ethan Wertzberger was a perfect 2-for-2 as well, while Tyler Dunham went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run.
