SPORTS SHORTS: AGWSR knocks off No. 1 Kee Hawks

WEST UNION — The AGWSR softball team turned around a rough start to the weekend with a huge win to open Saturday’s play at the North Fayette Valley Tournament.

The Class 1A No. 12 Cougars (8-3) knocked off No. 1 Kee of Lansing 3-2, and followed it up with an 18-4, five-inning walloping of MFL-Mar-Mac.

A day after falling to a pair of ranked 4A teams — ADM and Waverly-Shell Rock — AGWSR snapped back by rallying past Kee with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Cougars led 1-0 on MaKenna Kuper’s solo home run in the fifth, but the Kee Hawks (6-2) took the lead with two runs in the top of the sixth.

Rachel Sicard reached on an error to kickstart the Cougars in the sixth, and Taylor Sperfslage walked. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch before Josie Winterberg singled home Sicard, though Sperfslage was thrown out at the plate. One out later, Carrington Hunt reached on an error and No. 9 hitter Sammy Mucino plated Winterberg’s pinch-runner Haileigh Homeyer with a single.

Taryan Barrick tallied 13 strikes, walked one and allowed four hits and two unearned runs for the win in the circle. She also had one of AGWSR’s six hits.

The Cougars closed the tournament by trampling MFL-Mar-Mac 18-4 in five innings. Seven of AGWSR’s 10 hits went for extra bases, led by Kuper going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and five RBIs.

Spersflage went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBIs, while Ali Gerbracht had two hits. Sicard added a double and drove in a pair.

AGWSR dives back into NICL West Division action with Monday’s game at BCLUW.

MHS softball splits with No. 6 Waukee

WAUKEE — The Marshalltown softball team split a doubleheader with Class 5A No. 6 Waukee on Friday, falling in the first game, 6-1, and winning the second, 6-5.

Abby Brenneke earned the win in game two for the Bobcats (1-6), pitching all seven innings while giving up seven hits, five earned runs and 10 walks. Elly Bates was the losing pitcher for the Warriors (2-1), coming in to relieve Olivia Ogles in the fifth inning.

Regan Mazour had a perfect 4-for-4 line at the plate for MHS, scoring a run in the process, while Alyvia Chadderdon went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Erica Johnson knocked in the winning runs with a two-RBI double in the seventh inning, driving in Gabby Himes and Chadderdon.

McKaylee Dawson toed the rubber for the Bobcats in game one, alowing six runs and six hits in seven innings pitched. Molly Jacobson earned the win for Waukee, going all seven innings and giving up two hits and one run while striking out three.

Chadderdon and Erica Johnson had the only hits in the game for Marshalltown.

Up next the Bobcats return home to welcome in Mason City for a CIML Iowa Conference doubleheader on Monday, starting at 6 p.m.

Redhawks split in home tournament

TRAER — The North Tama baseball team split its games in its home tournament on Saturday, beating Iowa Valley, 8-7, but falling to North Linn, 0-9.

Izach Hensen pitched in the win over the Tigers for the Redhawks (6-3), going all seven innings while allowing nine hits, three earned runs and two walks and striking out five.

Tate Payne went 2-for-4 at the plate with a stolen base in the win, while Gabe Kopriva also went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBIs.

Against the Lynx, Aaron Snider took the loss by allowing nine hits, five earned runs and two walks.

Payne again had a good line against North Linn, going 2-for-3 in the loss and knocking down half of the Redhawks’ hits.

Up next North Tama hosts Ricveville on Monday for a single game starting at 5 p.m.

Royals sweep CAL in conference pair

ZEARING — The Colo-NESCO baseball team swept a doubleheader over CAL on Friday, winning the first game, 16-1, and taking the second 6-5.

The Royals (5-3) dominated game one, with Bryce Niemeyer pitching four innings of one-hit baseball against the Cadets (4-3).

Kelly Gray had a perfect 3-for-3 line at the plate in game one, scoring three times and driving in three runs as well. Matthew Hill also had three RBIs on a 1-for-3 line.

Game two was much tighter, and Colo-NESCO had to fight through some adversity. Heading to the bottom of the seventh down 5-2, the Royals needed at least three runs to keep the hopes alive.

They got four in the frame, however, capped off by a walk-off two-run home run by Mason Lytle. Shawn Gilbert earned the win on the mound, pitching the final three innings in relief of Sean Cutler and allowing no hits and no runs while striking out six.

The Royals will next travel to Baxter on Wednesday for an Iowa Star matchup.

North Tama softball falls to Clarksville

CLARKSVILLE — The North Tama softball team lost an Iowa Star Conference game to Class 1A No. 2 Clarksville on Friday, 4-0.

Tessa Dvorak pitched in the loss for the Redhawks (1-6), going six innings while giving up seven hits and four runs and striking out four.

Carissa Calderwood and Sable Fehr had the only hits of the game agains the Indians (6-0).

G-R baseball tops AGWSR in NICL West

ACKLEY — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck baseball team improved its current winning streak to four games on Friday with a win over NICL West Division foe AGWSR, 5-2.

Tyler Tscherter earned the win for the Rebels (4-1, 1-0), going 6 2/3 innings while allowing just four hits and one earned run and striking out 10.

Luke Starr took the loss for the Cougars (2-1, 0-1), allowing six hits and two earned runs while striking out six.

G-R had seven total hits in the win, with Tscherter, Walker Thede, Kyle Koppen, Mason Skovgard, Bronson Wrage, Eli Thede and Jackson Kiburis all knocking down singles.

The Rebels next welcomes in Sout Hardin on Monday, while AGWSR hits the road to take on BCLUW.

West Marshall baseball falls at D-NH

DIKE — The West Marshall baseball team suffered its second loss of the season on Friday by dropping a game to Dike-New Hartford on the road, 9-2.

Parker Hulbert took the loss for the Trojans (6-2), going 1 2/3 innings and giving up eight hits, five runs and two walks while striking out three.

Cameron Bannister went 1-for-3 at the plate against the Wolverines (7-2), driving in a run and scoring one himself, while Kinnick Christensen went 1-for-2 with a run scored.

West Marshall heads north again on Monday to face off with Aplington-Parkersburg, starting at 7:30 p.m.
