SPORTS SHORTS: BCLUW outlasts Gladbrook-Reinbeck

BEAMAN — The BCLUW baseball team won an NICL West Division game over Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Monday, 5-3.

The Rebels (14-6, 4-4) had a 3-1 lead after the second inning, but the Comets (10-9, 7-1) scored three runs in the third and added an insurance run in the sixth to secure the victory.

Blake Mann picked up the victory for BCLUW, pitching six innings allowing three runs, only one earned, walking four batters and striking out five. Logan Mann picked up the save by pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh.

Tyler Tscherter took the loss for G-R, going 2 1/3 innings and giving up four runs.

Blake Mann drove in the insurance run in the sixth with an RBI single for the Comets, while Koty Kruse and Jack Garber had an RBI single and an RBI double in the third respectively.

Mason Skovgard had a double and an RBI for the Rebels, while Bronson Wrage had a single and an RBI.

G-R next travels to take on Denver in a non-conference clash tonight, while the Comets host West Marshall on Wednesday.

West Marshall doubles up Mustangs

GILMAN — The West Marshall baseball team earned a come-from-behind victory over NICL West Division foe East Marshall on Monday, 4-2.

The Trojans (15-9, 6-2) trailed 1-0 after the fourth inning and were tied with the Mustangs (5-14, 3-6) 2-2 after the fifth, but they added two more runs in the sixth to come away with the victory.

Nat Markle picked up the win for West Marshall, pitching 2 1/3 innings in relief of Parker Hulbert and allowing two hits and no runs while striking out four. Hulbert gave up five hits and two runs while walking four and striking out one in 4 2/3 innings of work.

Austin Elliot took the loss for East Marshall, pitching 5 2/3 innings while allowing three hits, two earned runs and striking out four while walking five.

Jake Tollefson went 2-for-4 with a run and three RBIS for the Trojans, while Ryan Reyerson had an RBI single in the fifth that briefly gave his team the lead. Tollefson put West Marshall up for good with a two-RBI double in the sixth that scored Ben Kielman — running for Markle who reached off a walk — and Gabe Jones.

Zane Johnson went 2-for-3 with a double and a run for the Mustangs, while Zach Jacobson also went 2-for-3 with a double and Justin Ridout and Eric Ommen each had a hit and an RBI.

Up next West Marshall hosts South Hamilton tonight, and East Marshall heads travels to take on Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Wednesday.

Comets clobber G-R softball, 12-0 in 3

CONRAD — The BCLUW softball team shrugged off a 1-3 performance over the weekend in the Bobcat Classic with a 12-0 victory over NICL West Division foe Gladbrook-Reinbeck in three innings on Monday.

Bailey Ashton pitched a perfect game for the Comets (16-11, 6-3), striking out five of the nine batters she faced.

Cate Nason hit her second home run of the season with a two-run dinger in the second inning on her way to finishing 2-for-2, while Easton Swanson, Bailey Ashton and Parker Scurr all also went 2-for-2.

BCLUW will next be in action tonight when it heads to take on AGWSR in Ackley, starting at 7:45 p.m.

Cougars chase off South Hardin, 10-0

ACKLEY — The Class 1A No. 4 AGWSR softball team earned an NICL West Division win over South Hardin on Monday, 10-0 in five innings.

Taryan Barrick pitched a one-hit shutout for the Cougars (19-6, 8-1), striking out 11 in the process.

Ali Gerbracht went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Carrington Hunt went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two stolen bases and Josie Winterberg finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run.

AGWSR hosts BCLUW tonight for another NICL West clash, starting at 7:45 p.m.
