SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcats downed twice by Maroons

WEST DES MOINES — The Marshalltown softball team was swept in a CIML Iowa Conference doubleheader by Class 5A No. 9 Dowling Catholic on Wednesday, falling in the first game 10-0 in six innings and the second game 12-0 in three innings.

McKaylee Dawson gave up nine hits and 10 runs in 5 1/3 innings in the first game for the Bobcats (1-15, 0-8), walking six batters and giving up three home runs in the process.

McKenna Major went 2-for-3 in the loss at the plate, while Kyra Feldman went 2-for-2 with a double.

Kaitlyn Moses finished 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and five RBIs for the Maroons (9-5, 4-2). Alyssa Last picked up the wins for Dowling while striking out two batters.

Kailee Pollard took the loss in game two for MHS, allowing 12 hits in 2 2/3 innings pitched. Moses again homered for the Maroons while going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Bri Rodriguez was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

The Bobcats only had three hits in game two, with Major and Erica Johnson each recording singles and Marina Rosalez knocking down a double.

Marshalltown returns to action tonight when it hosts Boone for a single game, starting at 8 p.m.

West Marshall knocks off No. 5 AGWSR

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall softball team handed Class 1A No. 5 AGWSR its first loss of in NICL West Division play on Thursday, 7-2.

Loran Nicholson picked up the win for the Trojans (8-6, 3-3), allowing eight hits and two runs in seven innings while walking two.

Renae Schaper swung the bat well again for West Marshall, finishing 2-for-4 with two doubles and 4 RBIs, accounting four two of the Trojans’ four hits. The Cougars (14-4, 6-1) walked 10 West Marshall batters in the loss.

Up next the Trojans host the Rose Festival Tournament on Saturday, starting with a game against Baxter at 11 a.m., while AGWSR heads to Cedar Falls for a meeting with the Tigers tonight, starting at 7:30 p.m.

MHS freshmen fall to Dowling

The Marshalltown freshman baseball squad was swept at home by Dowling Catholic on Wednesday, falling 12-2 and 10-0, both games ending after five innings.

In the opening game, Marshalltown led 2-1 after the first inning but didn’t score again. Joe Burnes and Carson Williams both scored for the Bobcats, but MHS managed just two hits throughout the contest. Tyler Dunham and Williams each singled.

Jacob VanPelt took the loss on the mound for Marshalltown, allowing eight runs — five earned — on two hits and five walks over 3 1/3 innings. Drake Davis pitched the last 1 2/3 frames, allowing four runs on two hits and five walks.

In the nightcap, Marshalltown came up with three hits but no runs in the 10-0 loss. Gannon Williams had a double while Carson Williams and Patrick Landeros both had a single.

Dunham got the loss, allowing six runs — two earned — on eight hits and one walk over four innings, striking out five. Bennett Hageman surrendered four unearned runs on two hits and a walk in one inning.

The Bobcats were ticketed for six errors in both games of the doubleheader.
