SPORTS SHORTS: East Marshall goes 1-1 at North Polk

ALLEMAN — The Class 2A No. 10 East Marshall softball team suffered its first loss of the season but got back on track with its second game at the North Polk Tournament.

The Mustangs (9-1) fell 5-1 to 3A No. 7 North Polk in their first game on Friday, but rebounded with a 14-0, three-inning triumph over Chariton.

Against North Polk, the host Comets (6-3) had six of their seven hits go for doubles. East Marshall hurler Kodie Hoskey struck out two and walked none, while three errors led to two Comet tallies.

Melinda Puumala led East Marshall with a 2-for-4 day at the plate, while Hoskey drove in Juliana Arifi, who had singled, as the Mustangs’ lone run in the fourth inning. Hannah Birks and Reagan McIlrath added singles against Sophie Swygman, who walked one and struck out four.

Against Chariton, East Marshall rapped out 12 hits in just three innings, sending 11 batters to the plate in the top of the first. Hoskey hit a two-run double in the seven-run first, and Ellen Hungerford had a two-run single in the four-run second.

Madison Farrington connected for her first home run of the season, a three-run shot, to give the Mustangs their 14-0 lead in the top of the third.

Maria Rasmusson, McIlrath, Farrington, Arifi and Hungerford each had two hits in the blowout win, as McIlrath tossed a three-hit shutout with three strikeouts.

The Mustangs meet Des Moines Roosevelt and 2A No. 3 Des Moines Christian in today’s tournament action.

BCLUW wallops Woodbury Central

HUXLEY — The BCLUW softball team kicked off its trip to the Ballard Tournament with a 6-1 victory over Class 1A No. 10 Woodbury Central.

Bailey Ashton scattered six hits and two walks over seven innings for the complete-game victory, striking out 11 along the way.

Cate Nason led the BCLUW bats with two hits, hitting a double and driving in two. Easton Swanson had an RBI double, while Lauren Anderson drove in two runs without a hit. Kaylee Goecke singled and drove in a run, while Kiersten Kruse, Lili Wilson, Parker Scurr and Ashton each added singles against the Wildcats (6-2).

The Comets (6-3) return to action today with games at 8 a.m. against 2A No. 2 Central Springs, at 1:15 p.m. against 3A No. 13 Clarke, and 4:45 p.m. against host Ballard.

AGWSR falls to two ranked 4A teams

WEST UNION — The Class 1A No. 12 AGWSR softball team suffered a pair of losses to open the North Fayette Valley Tournament, falling to two ranked 4A teams on Friday.

The Cougars (6-3) lost 10-0 in five innings to 10th-ranked ADM and 3-2 to No. 15 Waverly-Shell Rock.

Rachel Sicard took the ball against ADM and surrendered nine earned runs on 11 hits and five walks. AGWSR got just three singles against ADM hurler Paige Jansen, who struck out eight and walked one. MaKenna Kuper, Taryan Barrick and Carrinton Hunt each had a hit for the Cougars.

AGWSR got the potential tying run to third base in the bottom of the seventh inning against Waverly-Shell Rock but couldn’t chase her home.

The Go-Hawks broke a 2-all tie in the top of the sixth and AGWSR couldn’t answer. Barrick took the loss, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out 11.

Sara Carnes held the Cougars to two runs on four hits and four walks, striking out four in the win. Kuper had an RBI triple in the fifth to drive in Sammi de Neui as the tying run.

The Cougars return to action today with games against 1A No. 1 Kee of Lansing and unranked Maquoketa Valley.

STC softball splits past Wolverines

GREEN MOUNTAIN — The South Tama County softball team snapped its winless slide to start the season with Friday’s 11-8 non-conference win over GMG.

The visiting Trojans (1-6) managed to score more runs in the first three innings (8) than they had in their first six games (4), giving freshman pitcher Ashlynn Ellenbecker just enough run support.

GMG (1-6) jumped out to a 5-2 lead through two frames before South Tama erupted for a six-spot in the third. The host Wolverines got back to within 8-7 before STC tacked on three crucial insurance runs in the sixth.

Maesa Groth led GMG with a 3-for-4 day at the plate that included a double and an RBI. Kelsey Vaverka was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored, while Zoe Duncan went 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs.

GMG goes to the Gladbrook-Reinbeck Tournament today in Gladbrook, meeting Class 1A No. 11 Lisbon at 11 a.m. North Tama and the host Rebels square off in the 9 a.m. opener.

Colo-NESCO 10-runs South Hardin

MC CALLSBURG — The Colo-NESCO softball team earned a 10-0 home win win over South Hardin in five innings on Friday.

Mackenna Ruffcorn earned the win on the mound for the Royals (4-3) going all five innings and allowing just two hits while striking out two as well.

Ruffcorn had a good day at the plate too, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Ayvarie Bappe had two RBIs and a double for Colo-NESCO, while Faith Vincent was walked twice and crossed the plate both times.

Mustangs take care of GMG baseball

GILMAN — The East Marshall baseball team ended a six-game losing streak on Friday with a win over GMG, 17-5 in five innings.

Tyler DeBondt went all five innings for the Mustangs (2-6), allowing just four hits and five runs while striking out five and walking one.

Aaron Fleming took the loss for the Wolverines (1-7).

Justin Ridout went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and four runs for East Marshall, while Austin Elliot and Zane Johnson each went 2-for-3 with Elliot knocking in two RBIs and Johnson one.

Comets too much for South Hardin

ELDORA — The BCLUW baseball team beat NICL West Division foe South Hardin on the road on Friday night, 7-2.

Logan Mann pitched all seven innings for the Comets (4-3, 2-0), allowing eight hits while striking out 14 and walking one.

Cade Spieker took the loss for the Tigers (1-3, 1-1), going 5 2/3 innings.

Koty Kruse had a double for BCLUW, while Troy Dolphin had a single, two doubles and an RBI.

Redhawks edged in extras by Indians

CLARKSVILLE — The North Tama baseball team lost a meeting with Clarksville on Friday, 12-11 in eight innings.

The Redhawks (5-2) owned an 11-7 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Indians scored four times in the seventh to tie things up, then walked it off in the eigth with a run to earn the win.

Lance Zobel started on the mound for North Tama, going 5 2/3 innings while allowing six hits and five runs and striking out 10. Ryan McLean took the loss, giving up just one run in one inning pitched and striking out three.

Skyler Staker went 4-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs and three stolen bases. Hale Hulme finished 2-for-3 with two runs and four RBIs, while Tyler Morrison scored four times.

Plainsmen topple GMG baseball team

GREEN MOUNTAIN — The GMG baseball team lost a home meeting against Belle Plaine on Thursday, 8-4.

Blaze Krull took the loss for the Wolverines (1-6), allowing seven hits and eight runs in 6 1/3 innings while striking eight.

Brock Baldazo went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored while Kolton Gill went 1-for-4 with three RBIs.
