Trio of ’Cats named to all-CIML first team

The Marshalltown High School boys soccer team had six total selections to the CIML Iowa all-conference teams, three on the first team and three on the second team.

Senior goalkeeper Ricky Ibarra, a first-team selection in 2017, was a unanimous selection to the first-team this season. He finished fourth in the conference in saves with 53 for the Bobcats (9-7, 2-2). In 470 minutes played in goal, Ibarra only allowed nine goals past him during the year, good for a .855 save percentage which was second in the CIML Iowa. He also had four assists and was an important piece in both the midfield and defense, solidifying nearly any place he was asked to play.

Sophomore striker Jose Torres made his second appearance on the first team this season after leading the conference in goals scored and total points. Torres’ 17 total goals were seven more than Johnston’s Derrick Beckman in second, a unanimous first-team selection for the Dragons. Torres also led the conference in assists — along with Beckman — with seven, and his 41 total points were 14 more than Beckman in second. Torres also finished second in the conference in shots on goal with 19, coming in with a .895 shot-on-goal percentage.

Senior defender Frankie Ramirez was selected to the first team for the first time in his Bobcat career. Ibarra was the main defensive presence on a Marshalltown team that allowed just 25 goals all season, the best mark for the Bobcats since 2014. Ramirez also played minutes in the midfield when called upon and was someone coach Chris Fuchsen pointed to as a leader on the team many times.

Three MHS players were named to the second team, with senior Tony Angel making his second-straight appearance on the all-conference team after a first-team selection last year while sophomore Austin Shomo improved from his honorable mention last season to the second team and fellow sophomore Rene Hernandez made his first showing.

Seniors Luis Ibarra and Edgar Armenta and juniors Caleb Summers, Samuel Estrada and Brandon Ordaz all were named as honorable mentions.
