Kao signs with SE Missouri State

Former Marshalltown Community College guard Oscar Kao has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the NCAA Division I program at Southeast Missouri State University for the 2018-19 season.

Kao, who came to Marshalltown via Taipei, Taiwan, started nearly every game for the Tigers last season while averaging 13 points per game. He was an efficient shooter, hitting 44.3 percent of his shots from the floor and 39 percent from behind the 3-point line.

Kao was a second-team all-Region XI selection in his freshman campaign. His best game of the year came in a 36-point effort against State Fair Community College, while he also had a 29-point game against Iowa Western and a 28-point showing against Moberly Area Community College.

“Oscar worked very hard on and off the court during his time at MCC,” Tigers head coach Brynjar Brynjarsson said. “It goes to show where hard work can get you. SEMO is getting a great kid that will put forth the work, and will have an impact in winning.”

Kao bolsters a Redhawks roster that went 14-17 last season and 8-10 in Ohio Valley Conference play. Southeast Missouri State — located in Cape Girardeau — is coached by Rick Ray, who is entering his fourth season at the helm, and they will look to make the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2000. Kao will provide an immediate boost to the Redhawks’ scoring, as they only had three players average 10 or more points per game last season.
