SPORTS SHORTS: Colo-NESCO clubs CAL in twinbill

LATIMER — The Colo-NESCO softball team won an Iowa Star Conference doubleheader over CAL on Friday, taking the first game 13-1 in three innings and the second 15-0 also in three innings.

Mackenna Ruffcorn picked up the win in game one for the Royals (11-13), allowing just one hit and no runs in two innings while striking out four.

Rylee Purvis had a perfect 3-for-3 line in the win with a run scored and three RBIs, while Faith Vincent also was perfect with a 2-for-2 showing, including a run and an RBI.

Purvis was the winning pitcher in game two, allowing no hits or runs in two innings while striking out two. Megan Carlson pitched the final inning of both games, giving up a combined two hits and one run in the process.

Gracie Kettwig went 3-for-3 in game two with a run and an RBI, while Ayvarie Bappe, Claire Skinner, and Vincent all finished 2-for-3.

STC softball trips up South Hardin, 15-4

ELDORA — The South Tama County softball team beat South Hardin on Friday in a non-conference game, 15-4 in six innings.

Ashlynn Ellenbecker picked up the win for the Trojans (3-25), pitching a complete game while allowing three hits, one earned run and striking out five.

Queta Diego went 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored, five RBIs and her first home run of the season. Ellenbecker also had three hits, including a triple, and she drove in four runs against the Tigers (4-23).

Wolverines clipped by Don Bosco

GILBERTVILLE — The GMG softball team lost an Iowa Star Conference game to Don Bosco on Friday, 8-7.

The Wolverines (4-18) were leading going into the sixth inning, 7-6, but the Dons scored twice in the bottom of the frame then held GMG scoreless in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.

Kelsey Vaverka took the loss for the Wolverines, pitching the complete game while allowing eight hits and striking out four batters.

Zoe Duncan had two hits and two RBIs for GMG, Vaverka had a double and an RBI, Emily Vaughn had two RBIs and Madi Krull had a single.

Knights slip past North Tama baseball

TRAER — The North Tama baseball team dropped a non-conference game to Union Community on Thursday, 9-8.

The Redhawks (14-8) trailed the Knights 8-1 after four innings but scored seven runs in the final three frames, it just wasn’t quite enough to complete the comeback.

Ryan Mclean took the loss for North Tama, pitching 3 1/3 innings while allowing six hits and six runs.

Hale Hulme went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored at the plate, while Gabe Kopriva also went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

South Tama shakes off North Tama

TRAER — The South Tama County softball team won a non-conference game against cross-county foe North Tama on Thursday, 6-4.

Ashlynn Ellenbecker earned the win for the Trojans (2-25), pitching the complete game and allowing three hits, three earned runs and striking out seven Redhawks (7-14).

Dalaynee Henle finished 2-for-3 with an RBI for STC, while Abby Sandvick went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI and Kenze Smith went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

West Marshall wallops Madrid, 13-3

MADRID — The West Marshall softball team won a non-conference game against Madrid on Thursday, 13-3.

Grace Porter earned the win, going five innings while allowing four hits and three runs and striking out four.

Brooke Snider went 3-for-5 with a home run, Katie Price finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored, Loran Nicholson finished 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, and Emma Meyer finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and three RBIs.

TigerHawks outscore Royals softball

COLFAX — The Colo-NESCO softball team lost a non-conference game to Colfax-Mingo on Thursday, 21-11.

Rylee Purvis took the loss for the Royals (9-13), pitching 3 1/3 innings while allowing seven hits and eigth runs.

Mackenna Ruffcorn hit a home run and drove in five RBIs in the loss, while Purvis went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
