SPORTS SHORTS: Mustangs fall to ranked Plainsmen

BELLE PLAINE — The East Marshall volleyball team lost its opener to Class 2A No. 12 Belle Plaine on Tuesday in three sets, 25-20, 25-18, 25-18.

Juliana Arifi had 18 of 28 kills for the Mustangs (0-1), while Maria Rasmusson had 12 assists and Karissa Young nine.

Quin Damman led the way defensively with nine digs, followed by Arifi with six and Genesis Wanatee, Zoeie Fontanini and Rasmusson all with four.

Nicholaa Phillipe led the Plainsmen (1-0) with nine kills, followed by Dani Montgomery and Kenzie Mantz with eight.

East Marshall will be back in action on Saturday in a tournament at Grinnell, starting at 9 a.m.

Bobcat QB Club returns on Friday

The Marshalltown Bobcat Quarterback Club is having its first meeting of the 2018 season on Friday.

Each week the club will meet for lunch to hear from MHS head football coach Adam Goodvin about the upcoming game and how the season is going. Additional fall sports coaches will come to speak as well every week, as well as players from the football team and other sports.

The Bobcat Quarterback Club meets on Fridays through the fall and winter sports seasons at noon at O’Hungry’s Restaurant and is open to all Marshalltown fans.

In the first meeting this Friday, Goodvin will preview the team’s first game of the year against Des Moines North and girls cross country coach Stacy O’Hare will recap her team’s performance at the Marshalltown Earlybird Invite, which runs on Thursday.

Iowa Wolves to hold local tryouts

DES MOINES — The Iowa Wolves NBA G-League affiliate of the Minnesota Timberwolves announced two local tryout dates for the 2018-19 season.

One will take place on Sept. 15 at the Courts at Mayo Clinic Square in Minneapolis from 4-6 p.m. and the other on Sept. 22 at Kingdom Hoops Basketball in Des Moines from 10 a.m. to noon.

All prospective players interested in attending local tryouts must submit the required paperwork, including registration, disclosure and release forms prior to participating in tryouts. All required forms and instructions to submit paperowrk can be found at IAWolves.com.

Participants must pay a non-refundable registration fee of $150 before Sept. 7 at 5 p.m. for the Minneapolis tryout and before Sept. 14 at 5 p.m. for the Des Moines tryout.
