Bobcats place fourth at Ankeny Invite
ANKENY — The Marshalltown golf team placed fourth in the Ankeny Invite on Monday with a score of 304.
The Bobcats and Des Moines Roosevelt each finished with a 304 at Otter Creek Golf Course, but the Roughriders took third on a fifth-score tiebreaker.
Cole Davis was the top MHS placer by finishing with a 2-over-par 73 to take eighth place individually. Bobcat head coach Lucas Johnson said Davis and JD Pollard, who finished in 16th with a 5-over 76, drove the ball well but struggled on the greens.
“Cole Davis hit 15-of-18 greens in regulation and JD Pollard had 13-of-18, so for those two to combine for three birdies on the day feels like some missed opportunities for sure,” Johnson said. “The greens had just been aerated, which may have played into some of it, but we always stress to the team that the course is the same for every player so that can’t be an excuse.”
Lucas Schneider was the second-best placer for Marshalltown, shooting a 4-over 75 to take 12th. Schneider had back-to-back birdies on the first and second holes to secure his spot in the top 15.
“Lucas Schneider had an excellent day for us and finished especially strong going 1-under par in his last seven holes of the day,” Johnson said.
Grant Greazel rounded out the counting scores for MHS with an 80, while Colin Schmit and Brent Johnson both came in with 93s.
Dowling Catholic took first as a team with a 292, six strokes ahead of Ankeny Centennial in second, and Connor Van Weelden of Ames was the individual medalist with a 4-under-par 67.
The Bobcats now turn their eyes towards the CIML Iowa Conference meet on Wednesday, where they will look to defend last year’s title against the likes of West Des Moines Valley and Waukee at Willow Creek Golf Course, starting at 10 a.m.
