Davis takes second at Ames’ Turk Bowman Invitational
AMES — For the first time in 25 days, the Marshalltown boys golf team was able to get on the links for a meet, and Bobcat junior Cole Davis picked up right where he left off nearly a month ago.
Davis took runner-up medalist honors at the Turk Bowman Invite at Veenker Memorial Golf Course by shooting a 1-over-par 73.
“Veenker is a course that Cole Davis enjoys and over the years he has learned to embrace the challenge it brings,” MHS head coach Lucas Johnson said. “Given that he hit 15 of 18 greens in regulation, he thought his score should have been even lower.”
It was a good overall showing for the Bobcats as well, with Marshalltown placing third as a team with a score of 319. Waukee was the top team placer with a 305, followed by West Des Moines Valley with a 310.
“With nine of the top 15 teams in the state in the field, we knew we’d need to play well to finish near the top of the leaderboard,” Johnson said.
JD Pollard was the next-best Bobcat finisher by taking 19th with an 80, while Colin Schmit and Lucas Schneider each shot 83s to place 30th and 32nd respectively. Grant Greazel finished with an 86 and Mason Reid an 89 to round out the Marshalltown scores.
“As always, Veenker played tough and it was made even tougher with some of the pins in tricky locations,” Johnson said. “That led to a few more three putts than we’d like to see, but overall our guys navigated the course well.”
No matter what the outcome had been, Johnson said he was just ready to get out on the links.
” When we were making our schedule this summer we wanted a bit of a break around the start of school, but the cancellation of the Mark Mann Invite in Mason City the day before school combined with two rainouts last week made for 25 days without a meet,” he said.
The Bobcats are back on track with the schedule now, just in time for a home dual against Mason City at Elmwood Country Club on Thursday and the team’s home Joe August Invitational on Friday at the American Legion Memorial Golf Course.
