MCC scores in final minute to sink Hills

Kazuki Kimura

OTTUMWA — The 16th-ranked Marshalltown Community College men’s soccer team overcame a late push by Indian Hills to take down the Warriors 4-3 in Saturday’s ICCAC showdown.

After a scoreless first half, the Tigers (9-1-0, 4-1-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead with 22 minutes to go in the match. Indian Hills (3-3-1, 2-2-0) countered with three consecutive tallies to tie the score, only to see MCC answer inside the final minute with the game-winning goal.

Kazuki Kimura scored the winning tally with 55 seconds left, lifting the Tigers to victory.

“Today we saw some of the best moments of soccer this team has displayed this year, but we also saw how our own mistakes can give the other teams the possibility to get back into a game that was controlled but not finished,” said MCC head coach Rafael Martinez. “We must reflect on what we did during the first 70 minutes and what we didn’t do in the last 20. We must perform for 90 minutes the next time we play.”

Marshalltown captured a 3-0 lead starting with the icebreaker from Rafael Vacas less than 10 minutes into the second half. Gerald Diaz scored back-to-back goals in a span of 5 minutes, assisted by Cesar Mont and Taiki Kinugawa.

David Medeiros scored two of Indian Hills’ three goals in the next 21 minutes — once off a penalty kick and the equalizer on a free kick with 3 minutes left to play, but Kimura spoiled the Warriors’ comeback with his late goal.

MCC returns to the pitch on Wednesday, hosting Scott CC at 4 p.m. at the Marshalltown Community College campus.
