Mohawks edge MHS boys by 2

FORT DODGE — A few too many double bogeys seemed to make the difference as the Marshalltown boys’ golf team settled for second place to Mason City on Tuesday at Fort Dodge’s Joselyn Invite.

The Bobcats came in two strokes shy of the Mohawks, 318-320, for the team title. Marshalltown was buoyed by all four scoring golfers finishing in the top 10 individually, but J.J. Wickman’s medalist round of 5-over-par 76 was lower than the Bobcats could go.

Marshalltown’s Cole Davis tied for the third-lowest score of the day, taking fourth place with his round of 79, while fellow Bobcats JD Pollard and Lucas Schneider shared the fifth-best score of 80. Mason Reid claimed ninth with his 81, but Mason City got the low score to go with the steady team performance as well.

Brad Vaith (80), Pete Stadheim (80) and Evan Lynch (82) helped Wickman and the Mohawks hold off Marshalltown in the seven-team field.

The Bobcats’ four scoring golfers compiled nine double bogeys on their scorecards, while Mason City had just six. Both Wickman and Vaith were free of double bogeys on the day.

Marshalltown closes out its four-meet week with Thursday’s home dual against Mason City at Elmwood Country Club before hosting the Joe August Invite at 10 a.m. Friday at the American Legion Memorial Golf Course.
