No. 13 MCC men suffer first loss at Iowa Central

FORT DODGE — The No. 13 Marshalltown Community College men’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, falling 2-1 to Iowa Central in Saturday’s Iowa Community College Athletic Conference clash.

The Tritons (3-1-1, 1-0) opened up conference play with the first goal of the match as Guillaume Rouzic scored in the 20th minute, only to see MCC (5-1, 0-1) answer with a goal by Rafael Vacas in the 25th minute.

With 29 minutes left in regulation, Iowa Central regained control with a goal by Guzman Diaz that proved to be the game-winner.

“We can’t do anything but congratulate Iowa Central for the win,” said MCC head coach Rafael Martinez. “They had a plan and executed it perfectly and we didn’t do enough to get the game to go our way.

“The one positive I take is that we never gave up and kept trying to get the goal to tie the match. Now we have to regroup and work even harder to prepare ourselves for the next match. I believe in this team and know what we are capable of.”

The Tigers played without their starting goalkeeper, Joel Serrano, as Serrano went home to play for the Puerto Rican National Team. Tim Wackens got the second start of his career and came away with one save.

“Our intensity was outstanding,” Iowa Central head coach Pablo Rodriguez said. “I saw it all over the field, start to finish.”

MCC will travel to West Burlington on Wednesday to face Southeastern (0-4, 0-1) in a 4 p.m. contest.
